In a surprising turn of events, it’s been revealed that Sony’s film division is working on an adaptation of the PS4 exclusive. Days gone. Although not critically acclaimed, the studio’s latest video game adaptation, Unexploredthe Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg-directed film garnered relatively massive sales and acclaim with over $400 million earned worldwide.
Sam Heughan of Outlander fame is supposed to be in the lead role. Whether this is the same character as the game’s protagonist Deacon St. John or an entirely new creation remains to be seen.

Days gone

Days Gone is a PS4-exclusive role-playing game set in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, after an apocalyptic event has spread across the country, turning the majority of its inhabitants into food-eating zombies. fleshy, enraged and poorly functional. . You play as Deacon St. John, a biker who, throughout the game, proves to be more than just an outlaw, but a genuine human, caring and helpful, but also not to be crossed. Equal parts desire, revenge and morality, Deacon St. John is played in its entirety by Sam Witwer, a voice-over and mo-cap actor who will be known to Star Wars fans for his work in the clone wars TV show and several video game series.
Days gone was not particularly well received when first released. Full of glitches, bugs, and endgame errors, the once-promising game has encountered a huge bump in the road. Fortunately patched up quickly, Bend Studios delivered on the majority of what it promised before release, with huge hordes of roaming zombies, an engaging, if clichéd, story, and overall gameplay that took tension to a new level. There’s something to be said for running around mindlessly only to come across a few hundred zombies that will gnaw at your face.

A different Sam

While no disrespect is intended for Sam Heughan, it seems odd not to at least consider gaming star Sam Witwer. The only thing that makes sense with the possible snub is either that the film adapts the world, but not the main character with it, or that the story does not follow the same plans as the game.
Unfortunately for Witwer, reports suggest Heughan will be playing Deacon, which means a lot of the game’s fans will be disappointed. Not exactly something at the forefront of executives’ minds, as fans of the game will make up a small minority of the film’s audience. Being so different Unexploreda zombie apocalyptic movie will have more widespread appeal than a treasure-hunting Tom Holland backed by a miscast Mark Wahlberg.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter Sheldon Turner is linked to write the screenplay, having been nominated for the George Clooney-directed film In the air. Turner shows a small pedigree, which video game adaptations aren’t exactly known for.
A movie but no sequel
Fans at Bend Studios who developed the game are disappointed to learn that with almost concrete certainty there won’t be a sequel to the game. Surprising considering it’s shipped over nine million units since then. its release, which for an exclusive puts it up there in sales with the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and not far behind Horizon: Zero Dawn.
With the varied characters, expansive world building, and the end of the first game, a sequel seemed inevitable, but sadly, that doesn’t seem to be happening. That said, perhaps with the film’s promising quality and success, interest will be revived on the gaming side enough to develop a sequel.
