Eric Pyles got off the school bus at 2:30 p.m. on December 12, 2000, which is a Tuesday. He did this as he always has.
That day, a handful of his 12-year-old classmates noted that he was heading for his home in Union Township, Pennsylvania, in the opposite direction he often did.
After passing through the backyard of a house on Silvertown Road, he disappeared from view. He had decided that he would never return to his old home.

The last time anyone saw Eric Pyles was on the afternoon of December 12, 2000 in the vicinity of his home in Union Township, Lebanon County. The boy has not been seen or heard from since.

After leaving the chapel and entering the forest, Eric Pyles’ trail seems to have come to a complete stop. Investigators were unable to locate anyone who may have seen Eric after 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
They continued their search in the area surrounding the church and Eric’s house, but could not locate Eric anywhere. Maria said that despite Eric regularly bringing up the subject of the move to Virginia, she never believed he would actually pull off the move.
Investigators traveled to the Shenandoah Valley to meet with Eric’s parents and other relatives, but could not locate any trace of Eric’s presence there.
Eric previously said he failed in his attempts to hitchhike with a stranger because no one ever stopped to pick him up. Investigators feared he had attempted to hitchhike to Virginia without realizing how dangerous the business would be.

Eric Pyles was born and raised in Luray, Virginia, and both of his parents were still living there at the time of his disappearance. However, according to authorities, he would often return within a short period of time even though he had a tendency to run away.
He and Eric’s younger brother Thomas had only recently moved to Pennsylvania. After their parents were accused of neglecting and abusing them while living with them in Luray, Virginia, the children’s older sister Maria took care of them after the charges were brought against their parents .
They were moved to Maria’s house on Awol Road, which she shared with her husband and three children. Maria lived there with her family. The transition had not been easy.
