‘I could smell the water’: Henry Cavill reveals intense diet he had to go through for shirtless scenes to get that perfect look

Henry Cavill, the 39-year-old actor, has earned Hollywood hero status. Since his Steel man (2013) appearance, there have been very few projects that have failed to capture him in light of a leading man role. But these opportunities are rarely free. The level of a restrictive workout and diet routine that must be followed to deliver just one scene is revealed by the British actor.

One of Netflix’s few hits in recent years has been the horror-fantasy supernatural series, The witcher. Adapted from the eponymous Polish novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, the saga follows a magically enhanced warrior, Geralt of Rivia, who hunts supernatural creatures and goes on a reluctant journey to find and fulfill his destiny.

One of the key moments in this delightfully engrossing series is when Henry Cavill’s character is persuaded to attend a royal event that will later pave the way for his very destined path. The scene that required him to go shirtless had been in the works for three days where Cavill had to dehydrate himself to the point of being able to “feel the water nearby” — the irony of the situation being that the ideal male physique that appears on screen is, in reality, a person weakened to the point of fainting.

Henry Cavill’s diet for getting a screen-worthy physique

Most actors have been talking about the three-day dehydration process recently, including MCU Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. The reason for this is an extreme method of induced water imbalance that actually works to make their shirtless scenes look good on screen. Biologically, the transepidermal water loss that otherwise occurs naturally already causes one liter of water loss, either by diffusion or respiration. However, when this ratio is not balanced, the skin shrinks and stretches to the point where it rests on the muscle.

This isn’t the only time Cavill has expressed his relentless drive to push himself towards what’s required of him for his on-screen role. In previous years, the actor had gone through six months of brutal dieting and training after being cast in his role as DCEU Superman to get his famous god-like Kryptonian physique.
