Early life
Alexis Kerry Ohanian was born in the city of Brooklyn, located in the state of New York. Following the Armenian Genocide, his maternal grandparents fled to the United States, where they were granted asylum. Ohanian’s mother is German and was born there. He attended Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland, and as a senior in 2001 was selected to deliver the student speech at his graduation ceremony.
Career
Ohanian claims he became obsessed with technology when he received a 33.6k dial-up modem while in college.
He trained in web design and program writing by spending time on various messaging forums. He eventually started creating websites for charity groups for free by “cheating” them. He hid behind his email to disguise the fact that he was a teenager working in his parents’ basement. Eventually, he started building websites for nonprofit organizations for free.
Ohanian and his friend Steve Huffman introduced the concept of MyMobileMenu to Y Combinator shortly after Ohanian graduated from the University of Virginia in 2005 with degrees in business and history. The company didn’t want to pursue the proposal, but it encouraged the two to think of something else the company might be interested in funding. After a while, they designed the reddit.com website with the intention of making it the “front page of the Internet”.
Ohanian was able to achieve academic success while enrolled at the University of Virginia. As a result, he was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and was an active member of its chapter.
During the summer of 2005, Reddit became part of the first class of startups accepted by Y-Combinator. Subsequently, in 2006, Condé Nast purchased Reddit for an undisclosed amount of between $10 million and $20 million. Ohanian remained an active participant in the workings of Reddit while serving on the company’s board of directors. Ohanian was a Kiva Fellow in Yerevan, Armenia, throughout his time in the microfinance industry after leaving Reddit in 2010. Hipmunk was a travel website that Ohanian helped create in 2010, and he now works as a consultant for the company. Y Combinator, a company that invests in early stage startups, honored Ohanian by awarding him the title of “Ambassador to the East”. On June 10, 2020, it was revealed that an African-American businessman by the name of Michael Seibel had been selected to become a Reddit board member.
Ohanian was named the lead investor in a female-dominated organization that received a new franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League on July 21, 2020. This league is considered the highest level of competition for female athletes in the United States. In 2022, the first season of the brand new club which would later be called Angel City FC. Serena Williams, who is also Ohanian’s wife, is one of several prominent actors, artists, media personalities and athletes who are part of the ownership group, in which women hold a majority stake. The group also includes 14 former members of the United States Women’s National Team, Natalie Portman, who won an Oscar for her role in Black Swan, and many others.
Ohanian decided to step down as Managing Partner of Initialized in June 2020.
