Single career
Jo Durie had a successful junior career, winning British junior titles on all three surfaces (grass, hard and indoor) in 1976. In 1977 she turned professional and played her first match at Wimbledon against eventual champion Virginia Wade . Durie missed eight months of the 1980 season with a serious back injury. She did, however, make a successful comeback in 1981, advancing to the fourth round of singles at Wimbledon and the US Open, while earning her highest singles ranking to date of 31.
Her best season as a singles player came in 1983, when she finished sixth in the world and in prize money. Durie, an unrated player, beat Tracy Austin and Pam Shriver en route to reaching the French Open semi-finals. She advanced to the US Open Grand Slam singles semifinals later that year, but ultimately fell to Chris Evert in straight sets. Her meteoric rise in the singles rankings that year came to a halt in December when she lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. Due to his accomplishments in the singles game in 1983, Durie earned a coveted spot as the fifth seed at the 1984 WTA Tour Championship.
In 1984, she had her most successful season at Wimbledon as a singles player, reaching the quarter-finals after beating 15-year-old Steffi Graf in a famous fourth-round match. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 5 shortly after Wimbledon.
Doubles career
Durie, along with compatriot and fellow British player Jeremy Bates, was part of the team that became the first British doubles team to win the title in fifty-one years at Wimbledon in the mixed doubles competition in 1987. In 1991 , they made history by being the first British doubles pair to win the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open. These two records still stand since 2013. Together, Bates and Durie qualified for the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles competition at Wimbledon three more times, in 1986, 1990 and 1993. Moreover, as winners in title of the Australian Open in 1992, they competed well enough to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Throughout her career, Durie has made a total of eighteen women’s doubles finals and won five times. In addition to her Grand Slam victories in 1987 and 1991, her most successful year as a doubles player was 1983. That year, she made six finals and emerged victorious three times. In women’s doubles competition at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Durie advanced to the quarter-finals. This achievement qualified her for the WTA Tour Championship in 1984 in doubles, where she competed alongside Ann Kiyomura and qualified all the way to the championship match.

The British Wightman Cup, British Federation Cup and British European Cup were all won by teams on which Durie was a consistent contributor throughout 1979, 1981–89 and 1981–95 respectively (1989–92). Alongside Virginia Wade and Sue Barker, the British Federation Cup team that reached the team final in 1981 had Durie as the youngest member of the squad. In 1992, when the European Championship was held in Prague, Durie was the captain of the British team that won the competition.
Retirement
At the Wimbledon Championships in 1995, which was Durie’s 18th Championship appearance, she announced her retirement from tennis and honored the occasion with a performance that will be remembered. Despite undergoing three separate surgeries on her left knee, Durie competed in the No. 326 ranked championships in the world and still managed to advance to the second round of the women’s singles competition. In the first round, she won her match against Alexia Dechaume-Balleret of France in straight sets. Dechaume-Balleret is ranked No. 85 in the world. Her second and final singles match at Wimbledon was against Jana Novotná. It happened in the second round. Her final match at Wimbledon was a mixed doubles match on center court, which she competed alongside longtime partner Jeremy Bates. This match was his last match ever at Wimbledon.
She is one of the very few players to have a winning record against Steffi Graf and currently holds a 4-3 head-to-head lead over her opponent. It is important to note, however, that all of her wins over Graf came before or during 1985, a time when Graf was normally a significantly lower ranked player as she was still in the early stages of her career.
After retiring from the professional tour, Durie underwent heart surgery to correct a problem for which he was first prescribed beta-blockers early in his career. The procedure was successful in resolving the issue. Since the medications weren’t helping her feel better, she decided not to take them as directed. She disclosed this information in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live in March 2016, shortly after it became public that Maria Sharapova had been discovered taking a medicine for heart problems which was very similar to that which was later banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
After retiring, Durie worked as a tennis pundit for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as well as British Eurosport. Alongside her former coach, Alan Jones, she was once the number one coach of British player Elena Baltacha. She won the senior ladies’ invitational doubles event at Wimbledon in 1996 and 1997, winning both years in a row.
