Derek Dallas Carr, quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League, was born on March 28, 1991. (NFL). At Fresno State, where he twice won first-team All-MWC accolades, he played college football. In the 2014 NFL Draft, the Raiders took him in the second round. Carr, a three-time Pro Bowl draft pick, helped the Raiders qualify for the playoffs in 2016 for the first time since the team’s inception in 2002. In 2021, he guided Las Vegas to another playoff appearance playoffs.
First years
Rodger and Sheryl Carr’s youngest child, Carr, was born in Bakersfield, California. Before moving to Sugar Land, Texas in 2002 when his older brother, David Carr, was selected first overall by the then-expanding Houston Texans, he and his family resided in Bakersfield. Carr attended Bakersfield Christian High School for her senior year after returning to the city with her family.
At Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, Carr’s football career began. He spent his freshman year on the freshman team before moving to the varsity team as a sophomore as a backup quarterback. A preseason injury to another quarterback forced him to take the starting quarterback position despite his lack of preparation.
Carr improved steadily while serving as the starter for the Clements High School Rangers. As a sophomore, he completed passes for 1,246 yards and 12 touchdowns; as a junior, they totaled 1,622 yards and 16 scores. Before losing to eventual winners the (also undefeated) Katy High School Tigers in the Region 3 Quarter-Finals of the 2007 Class 5A Division 2 Playoffs, junior Carr led his team to a 13- 0 (including playoffs). Carr also underwent intense recruiting throughout his freshman year. Fresno State, SMU, Boise State, University of Southern California, UCLA and Utah were among his top college picks. Only Fresno State, SMU, and Utah have extended Carr scholarship offers among these institutions. At the end of his junior year, on May 25, 2008, he verbally committed to Fresno State. Carr was the first member of the class of 2009 to join the program.
Former NFL player and Bakersfield Christian High School athletic director Doug Barnett confirmed Carr’s transfer to BCHS in 2008 amid rumors he attended Stockdale High School or Bakersfield High School, both institutions known for their successful football programs in the past.
University career
2009 and 2010 seasons
Carr chose Fresno State, where his brother David also played quarterback, as a freshman for the 2009 spring semester so he could participate in spring football with the Bulldogs. According to former Fresno State head coach Pat Hill, true rookie Carr was “in the mix” for the starting quarterback position until mid-July. However, Hill said junior Ryan Colburn would start in Carr’s place just days before the start of the 2009 season in September. Carr had a limited role as a rookie, playing just five games.
In 2010, Colburn remained the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs. Carr replaced the starting quarterback for Fresno State in the fall of 2011 after spending the 2010 campaign in a redshirt.
2011 season
During the Bulldogs’ 4-9 campaign in 2011, Carr earned the right to start. In the Bulldogs’ loss to California to open the season, he made his debut as a starter. Carr had a breakthrough performance in a win over Idaho three weeks later, racking up 371 passing yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. In a loss to New Mexico State six games later on November 12, he had a season-high 391 passing yards and three touchdowns. Carr threw for 3,544 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions in the 2011 campaign. In various categories, he was among the top passers in the Western Athletic Conference.
2012 season
Tim DeRuyter, who took over as Carr’s head coach when Pat Hill was fired, was in place at the start of the season. Carr helped guide the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record in 2012, a major improvement. Davante Adams, who was a redshirt freshman entering the season, immediately established himself as a reliable target for Carr.
Carr threw for 300 yards, five touchdowns and an interception in a win over Colorado on Sept. 15 after splitting the first two games of the season. Carr played one career game in a 52-40 win over San Diego State two weeks later. He completed passes for 536 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, tying the school record.
October 27. He recorded 416 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in a 49-32 win over New Mexico while playing on the road. He finished the regular season with 452 yards throwing and four touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 48-15 win over the Air Force. He completed 4,104 passes for 37 touchdowns and seven interceptions during the 2012 campaign. He was named the 2012 MWC Offensive Player of the Year. His passing totals were among the Mountain West Conference leaders in many categories, just like the previous season.
