Doctor Strange’s Benedict Cumberbatch On The Character’s New Direction

Benedict Cumberbatch considers his future in the MCU, discussing how Doctor Strange is moving in a new direction following the conclusion of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Among the life and death stakes that jump into the reality of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film also found time to address and reevaluate Stephen Strange’s relationship with Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). By the end of the film, Strange is ready to leave his past love.

A symbol of the couple’s lost relationship and Strange’s struggle to move on is the broken watch given to him by Christine, which he still wears at the end of the first film, then repairs and puts away at the end of Multiverse of Madness.

Speaking to Oracle Time about Doctor Strange’s watch, Benedict Cumberbatch spoke about the symbolism of Strange repairing the watch in Multiverse of Madness and what that means for his future.

The Doctor Strange actor revealed that he “had the final say on the watch” and that “Rachel McAdams would have had a say as well because it’s her character who gives the watch”. Cumberbatch said the watch “spoke to me about the feeling between Strange and Christine”.

Speaking of Strange holding the broken watch in the first film, Cumberbatch said:

“In the first film, it was symbolic of the character and his relationship with Christine Palmer. It was very important in the fact that he stopped at the same time as his previous life in the car accident. And “He’s hanging on to it. Why is he hanging on to it? Because he’s the Time Lord? No. It’s because he’s still.”

Moving on to Strange fixing the watch before storing it in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessthe actor explained:

“It really is closure. And for that, he releases the timepiece again. He makes it work so he can go on without it. He puts it in the box. He doesn’t put it back on his wrist. He’s no longer a heartbroken Stephen Strange, who didn’t have the girl. He is a man who is moving on to a new era and a new adventure.

In a post-credits scene, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness features Charlize Theron as the witch Clea, who recruits Strange to help defeat an incursion caused by her actions. Given their romantic history in the comics, it seems like Strange is embarking on new adventures in more ways than one.
