Thanos was the big bad of the Infinity Saga which ended with Iron Man sacrificing himself to save the universe and erase Thanos and his army from reality. The mad titan was turned to ashes and dust and only seen as a lifeless corpse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
Thanos’ character designer, however, has a different take and said the Infinity Gauntlet wielder will once again return to the MCU as Marvel runs out of characters.

Thanos Could Return to the MCU, Says Creator Jim Starlin
Jim Starlin is the creator of the Thanos character in the comics. His first appearance was in The Invincible Iron Man #55 released in February 1973 after which he became the villain for a time in the comics.

Thanos’ death is of great significance in the MCU. The character has been referenced many times with people recalling the “blip” and getting over it. Jim Starlin recently spoke to Reverse about his love for the mad titan and how he could possibly return.
“Well, I think he probably strikes a chord. He raises questions that many of us have thought about. He’s also just a badass character. I don’t think anyone thinks we’ve seen the last from him. Disney made a lot of money off of him and there’s probably a lot of money left to be made. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”
The 72-year-old visual artist also spoke about the arid wasteland of characters Marvel faces now as they have no more characters to play. We know the comics are big with multiple realities colliding, but for that to happen on the big screen, Marvel will have to build from the ground up. With character introductions and their solo movies featuring a familiar character cameo to keep people in the loop, Marvel will have to start from scratch to tell a different story like they did with Iron Man (2008).
The return of Thanos with the theory of the multiverse

Jim Starlin said that as Marvel goes deeper into the multiverse theory, it opens a portal to bring back any number of characters since there are an infinite number of universes (look Rick and Morty). The Thanos creator further stated that Marvel has ideas involving more characters from the American visual artist.
“I’ve heard that Marvel might want to use other characters that I’ve created. I think they’re burning out. Now that they have this multiverse, there’s the possibility of bringing Thanos back. And with Thanos , it opens up possibilities for other characters, there are a few that they haven’t used, like the Blood Brothers.
It is recalled that at the end of Eternals (2021), Harry Styles emerges before the heroes disguised as Eros, Thanos’ brother. With more screen time for Eros, it’s possible we could see his brother return from this wild multiverse theory. So far, there’s been no official news from Marvel or Josh Brolin, the actor who portrayed Thanos.
The next episode of the Avengers in the MCU is Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars which are both set to release on May 2 and November 7, 2025 respectively.
