Broderick grew up in Los Angeles, California alongside twin sisters Karli and Brandi and half-brother Wynton by their father and mother Marcia Harvey. Steve was raised in Welch by his father Jesse Harvey who was a coal miner and his mother Eloise Vera who was a housewife. The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio when Steve was nine and the street he lived on is called Steve Harvey Way today. Steve attended Glenville High School and after enrolling in 1974 he enrolled at Ken State University before transferring to West Virginia University before graduating in 1978 – while a fraternity member Omega Psi Phi.
He started out doing odd jobs such as selling insurance, delivering mail and fixing cars, and he was also a boxer for about a year. On October 8, 1985, he did stand-up comedy for the first time at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland and after deciding to focus solely on comedy which wasn’t making enough money for him, he spent three years living in his Ford car. After participating in the Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search competition on April 16, 1990 and reaching the final, he was asked to host the show “Showtime at the Apollo”.
