The Buffalo Payments rehired Doug Marrone and Nathaniel Hackett in 2013 to serve as head coach and offensive coordinator, respectively. On January 27, 2022, the Denver Broncos announced that they had hired Hackett to take over as the team’s head coach.
With minutes remaining in the fourth quarter with the Broncos cheering on the Seattle Seahawks, Hackett and the team faced a 4-and-5 situation near midfield. Hackett’s first contest in charge was this one. Despite three timeouts at his disposal, Hackett decided to wait for the clock to reach 20 seconds so he could attempt a winning field goal from 64 yards. The Broncos lost 17-16 on a field goal attempt by Brandon McManus that sailed horribly left. Many people criticized the decision to shoot a discipline goal at 64 yards rather than aiming for 4th and 5th.
