Daredevil: Born Again – Why MCU’s Daredevil Reboot Doesn’t Need To Be As Dark As The Netflix Version

Amidst all the noise, Kevin Feige finally unveiled the new logo for the Daredevil: Born Again series. The scene was then graced by Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock themselves, that is, Vincent d’Onofrio and Charlie Cox. The new logo features the similar double-D logo we’ve all known and loved since the daredevil comics.

But there is already a version of Daredevil that we have seen on the screens, interpreted by the same actor. But what fans fear and already know is that we won’t be seeing the gritty, dark version we know, but rather a lighter, more kid-friendly version to match the MCU theme. Although fans think the change might be bad, it might actually be good.

Netflix’s The Gritty and Dark Daredevil

Marvel’s Daredevil was released on Netflix on April 10, 2015 and ran for 3 seasons before being canceled in 2018. The show had a darker theme, away from the general theme fans usually see in MCU projects. The series was Netflix’s first Marvel project, although it’s set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it stayed away from the crossovers with heroes we see in the movies due to its theme.

The show was made in a more detective thriller genre, with Matt Mudrock being a vigilante hero, who would defeat the miscreants of Hell’s Kitchen. The Netflix series wasn’t shy about showing brutal kills and fights, and lots of gore. Daredevil fans loved how the character was portrayed on the show and Charlie Cox’s performance in the role.

The actor successfully portrayed Matt’s struggles, trying to balance his “lawyer by day-justice by night” life. And how he always plays by the rules and doesn’t really kill any of his enemies, despite being called a “Hell’s Kitchen Devil.”

Why the MCU Doesn’t Need to Set Its Series in the Same Theme

Although the on-screen version of Daredevil is getting so much love, it’s not that accurate. Not that the character isn’t dark, but he has a sense of humor and can also be lighthearted at times. Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Bill Everett, Daredevil, from its conception, had a lighter side, even if it was overshadowed by its tragic traits.

Matt’s humor is more self-deprecating and witty comebacks, which is why it’s easy to overlook his lighthearted side. Also, his lighter side comes out more with his superhero friends, especially Spider-Man. He is also part of Team Red along with Deadpool and Spider-Man.

In daredevil #7 we see the best example of his humor when Matt Murdock wears a sweater with “I AM NOT DAREDEVIL” on it, at a Christmas party he attended with Foggy. But the truth is that he is and it annoys Foggy. It shows how much he loves humor from time to time.

The fact that Matt Murdock can be both dark with criminals and light with good guys only adds to the complexity of his character. It’s something we already see, his struggle to find balance.

Daredevil: Born Again is due out in 2024 on Disney+. The Netflix version of the show is now available to stream on Disney+.
