Morbius— one of the biggest box office duds of 2022 has carved out an identity for itself in the online realm. Beyond initial critical failure, the film ended up falling apart again following a re-release. With the internet’s meme culture embracing the effort wholeheartedly, Sony’s third installment in the Spider-Man universe has garnered a notoriously ironic accolade.

Despite the amazing comedic overtones associated with the premise, the film saw its Netflix release fairly recently. Needless to say, it’s Morbin time again. To say the Jared Leto star is doing pretty well on the streaming service would be an understatement. Shockingly enough, the reception has been tremendous, helping the effort to be the second most popular movie on Netflix USA right now.
Morbius is the second most popular movie on Netflix
On September 7, the Jared Leto-directed film was made available on Netflix. Home to some of the most stunning and well-received quality movies and series, the box office dud produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel has managed to reign supreme over many classic and notable Netflix titles.
Morbius follows the journey of Michael Morbius in a plot that can best be described as…interesting, to say the least. The film, apart from starring Jared Leto, was also associated with other renowned names, such as Matt Smith, Michael Keaton, Tyrese Gibson, etc. When the trailer for the 2022 effort was first released, fans were certainly not amused.

Only a few seemed to have opened their arms to Morbius, with revenue below the $200 million mark worldwide. A measly sum in contrast to today’s comic book mainstays. However, the disappointing and lukewarm reception quickly gave way to an array of parody memes, tongue-in-cheek jokes and a specific, memorable hashtag – #MorbiusSweep. The film was hailed as a cult classic among fans, who unconditionally accepted its blatant nature and humorously honored its “commercial success”.
Therefore, while it should come as no surprise to fans that the film is currently the second most popular Netflix film in the United States, the staggering fame of Morbius on the streaming service is certainly shocking to the otherwise oblivious masses.
Fans are ready to “Morb” one more time
It goes without saying – fans will never let the meme or the vast online culture surrounding the film die. Not now, never. With its recent success on Netflix, audiences have once again taken to Twitter to celebrate and recognize the film, which they consider a masterpiece of genius.

For die-hard fans, there’s no confirmation on a potential sequel, although Jared Leto himself starred in the joke just a few months ago. For the moment, Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’s time does not exist. Even if a future installment were to make its way to audiences, it’s safe to say that it might experience the same fate as the original film – a surviving critical failure primarily due to sardonic and satirical fandom culture.
That doesn’t rule out the possibility, however, that the Marvel legend played by Jared Leto will return in upcoming Sony releases centered on the Spider-Man universe. After all, the post-credits scene seems to hint at a convoluted but intriguing premise.
Morbius is exclusively available to stream on Netflix.
