Career

Farmer graduated from the Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia, where he participated in both baseball and football during his time there. Farmer’s role as a high school quarterback in the hit Hollywood film The Blind Side (2009) was filmed while still a student at Marist.
Farmer played shortstop while at the University of Georgia (UGA), where he set a record for the best fielding percentage ever at the shortstop position for the baseball team of UGA with a score of 0.968. His batting average was .308 and he batted for a .308 batting average.
In 2011, he was a member of the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he played summer baseball for his varsity team. Farmer was selected by the New York Yankees in the 35th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, but ultimately decided not to sign with the team. After that, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the eighth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft (with the 244th overall pick), and he subsequently signed a contract with the club.

The Dodgers came to the conclusion that Farmer would perform better behind the plate. His first professional baseball team was the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League. Later that year, he transferred to the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League. In 2014, he made his major league debut. Farmer was traded to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League after playing 57 games with the Great Lakes Loons, where he had a .310 batting average. There he played 36 games and had a .238 batting average.
Farmer started 2015 with the Quakes, the team for which he was selected to the All-Star team mid-season. Following his subsequent promotion, Farmer sat out the game as he was playing for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League. Farmer was selected to participate in the All-Star Futures Game as the Dodgers’ organization representative in 2015. He had a .272 batting average for Tulsa and appeared in 76 games for them. On July 28, 2017, Farmer got his first opportunity to play in the major leagues. Two days later, in his first major league at-bat, Farmer hit a two-run brace against Albert Suárez of the San Francisco Giants in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Dodgers a 3– 2 on the Giants. Farmer was used primarily as a pinch hitter for the Dodgers in 2017, playing a total of 20 games for the team and tallying six hits in 20 at-bats (.300). He was a pinch hitter for the Dodgers in the NL Division Playoffs and National League Championship Series in 2017, though he didn’t record a hit in those four at-bats. He was on the Dodgers roster for both series.
Farmer was on the Dodgers roster in 24 games during the 2018 season, starting 22 of those games at third base. In 68 at-bats, he had a .235/.312/.324 batting line; his slugging percentage was .324 overall.
Cincinnati Reds
Farmer was sent to the Cincinnati Reds along with Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood and Matt Kemp along with monetary considerations on December 21, 2018 by the Los Angeles Dodgers. In return, the Dodgers received Homer Bailey, Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray.
Farmer played in 97 games in 2019 and had a .230 batting average with 9 home runs and 27 RBIs. The following year, he played in 32 games and had a .266 batting average.
