“That’s one thing I can say is that I put everything I could want in a Star Wars movie into a Star Wars movie. I think ultimately that’s what defines the experience for me looking back on it and why I feel so grateful and good about it.
“I feel like, for better or for worse, when I had my chance at home plate, I swayed. I was very lucky to be able to do [that and work with] the folks at Disney and Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy, protecting the creative process so that I could really come in and really do what I wanted. It’s something that I don’t feel any regrets about or anything like that.
“I feel like I absolutely left it on the table. But I also feel like a filmmaker should do this with every movie they make. You know, I feel like if you get to the end of the process and you still have something in the tank for later, you’ve done the process wrong, I think.
Rian Johnson may have to find something else in the tank for another star wars movie, as the director is currently set to return to Lucasfilm to helm a new trilogy for the franchise. In the meantime, his Knives out after Glass Onion is set to hit select theaters and on Netflix later this year.
