Boremund Baratheon in House of the Dragon episode 4
The fourth episode of House of the Dragon opens with a scene from Rhaenyra’s Tour. The tour around Westeros was planned by King Viserys in order to find Rhaenyra a suitable match to marry. In the scene, we see Princess Rhaenyra accompanied by her protector and her personal shield Ser Criston Cole. They are at Storm’s End and are hosted by its lord and head of House Baratheon, Boremund Baratheon. He can be seen advising Rhaenyra regarding the various suitors online and telling her more about each of them.
When Samwell Blackwood proposes to Princess Rhaenyra, Boremund Baratheon informs her that the Blackwoods are an ancient house with a formidable army and are descendants of the First Men of Westeros. He was also seen during the first episode of House of the Dragon as he pledged allegiance to Princess Rhaenyra who was announced as the next heir to the Iron Throne by King Viserys. Boremund had participated in the tournament organized by King Viserys to celebrate the birth of his heir in the first episode. He won his duel and then asked Princess Rhaenys, the Queen Who Never Was, for her favor in the tournament. He is clearly a brave and strong warrior. In the series, he is portrayed by Julian Lewis Jones.
Who is Boremund Baratheon?
Boremund Baratheon is the lord of Storm’s End and head of House Baratheon. He is also related to House Velaryon as he is the only son of Lord Rogar Baratheon and Dowager Queen Alyssa Velaryon. In fact, he is the half-brother of King Jaehaerys I. Boremund Baratheon is a strong, fearsome and powerful man. He was understandably a supporter of the claims of his niece, Princess Rhaenys when King Jaehaerys was choosing his heir. It was described by Septon Eustace as a stone, hard and strong and motionless.
Boremund then has a son called Borros Baratheon who succeeded him as Lord of Storm’s End. Borros becomes an even stronger and more belligerent lord. Although he was supposed to support Princess Rhaenyra’s claim while Boremund supported that of Rhaenys and her son Laenor Velaryon who was now Rhaenyra’s husband, he ended up helping Aegon II in his battle for the throne.
House Baratheon and its power
“Ours is the fury. These are the words of the black stag of Baratheon; a battle cry rang through the land in rebellion when I, Robert Baratheon, the first of his name, seized the iron throne from the king madman, Aerys Targaryen, ending a nearly three hundred year old dynasty.
House Baratheon is a formidable and powerful royal house in Westeros. Their seal is that of a crowned black stag on a gold field. House Baratheon has been tied to House Targaryen from the beginning. Orys Baratheon was the founder of this house. He was also a general in the army of King Aegon I Targaryen. He even aided Aegon Targaryen in his conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. There were also rumors claiming that Orys was Aegon’s bastard half-brother. This makes the Baratheon even closer to the Targaryens. He showed his strength and might by taking over Castle’s Storm’s End by defeating Argilac the Arrogant, the last of the Storm Kings. House Baratheon is an extremely powerful house and will play an important role during the Dance of the Dragons and that too against Princess Rhaenyra and the Blacks.
