In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve seen Tony Stark and Peter Parker share a very close bond. Tony Stark is the one who introduced Spider-Man to the team, made him an Avenger, gave him all the cool suits he wore during the Infinity Saga, and watched over him. In Avengers: Endgameit was also apparent that one of the main reasons Tony ultimately builds the time machine is the chance to bring Peter back.

But why the two share this bond or why Tony mentored Peter and even chose him to be the next Tony Stark could be much more than we know. Could it be that the two share the same tragedy?
The Winter Soldier killed Tony Stark and Peter Parker’s parents?
According to a dark theory from Marvel, the love bond shared by the two could have a very dark reason behind it. In Captain America: Civil War, it is revealed to us that Tony’s parents did not die in an accident but were killed by Bucky Barner, Steve Rogers’ closest friend. It was Bucky when he was under HYDRA’s control. HYDRA used it to kill Howard Stark and Maria Stark and acquire the Super Soldier Serum.

As Steve tries to protect Bucky, this angers Tony Stark and becomes the reason for the final fight between the two. What bothers Tony even more is that Steve already knew Winter Soldier was the killer and he hid it from Tony. Now, there might be a chance that Bucky was the reason Peter Parker’s parents were killed.
Explaining Marvel’s Theory Further
Now we’ve been introduced to Peter Parker in the same movie and MCU skipped straight to the part where Tony Stark brought him to join the team and helped him fight Captain America and his gang. We don’t know much about Peter Parker’s past from the MCU. But what we do know is that Tony showers him with fatherly love. Is it because Tony knows how Peter’s parents died?

According to the theory, Peter’s parents were part of SHIELD and had discovered that the organization had been infiltrated by HYDRA during the Captain America: The Winter Soldier script. To protect their secret, the organization sent their most trusted puppet, the Winter Soldier, to kill Peter’s parents. And he delivers, as always. After Tony finds out about his parents, he further discovers that Peter shares a similar history to him, which is why he guides and trains him to be better, something we see in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
If the theory is true, it just makes the bond the two share a little sad and the interaction between Peter Parker and Bucky a little dark. Also, the fact that Peter doesn’t know it yet.
