‘Joker’ Parody Film Pulled By TIFF For ‘Rights Issues’

The People’s Prankster was scheduled to play at the Toronto International Film Festival, but was ultimately pulled due to “rights issues”.

The Toronto International Film Festival is currently underway, and a Joker The parody movie debuted during Midnight Madness on Tuesday. More screenings for The People’s Prankster were to take place, but the film was later pulled due to “rights issues” on the festival’s website. Here is the full message that was posted:

“The filmmaker has removed this film due to rights issues. We apologize for any inconvenience. Current ticket holders will receive an email from TIFF Customer Relations with information about their purchase.”

The People’s Prankster star and director Vera Drew later responded to the film shot by TIFF on his Twitterby writing the following:

“I have no idea how today is going and my team wants me to say nothing of course, so I’ll keep it vague… But whatever happens in the next few hours, I want you to know …if you’ve been waiting and wanting to watch our movie, you’re coming soon. Stay tuned and stay with me. Need your help.

What was that The People’s Prankster About?

The premise of the film is as follows: “After years of numbing himself with irony and an inhalant called Smylex, an unfunny wannabe clown struggles with gender identity, first love and old enemies all founding an illegal comedy theater in Gotham City. While the film is no longer screened at the film festival and may never see the light of day, you can still watch a trailer for The People’s Prankster below.

Here’s the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix Joker film:

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers on the iconic nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story never before seen on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly played by Joaquin Phoenix, is that of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. Clown for hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comedian by night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes a bad decision that causes a chain reaction of mounting events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham.
