Loki Season 2 May Introduce the Council of Kangs

Disney+ Loki had a very successful run in its first season, which debuted last year. Fans and critics loved it. Tom Hiddleston embraced the character so well that he almost became his alter ego. Soon enough, Marvel Studios has greenlighted the show’s second season. A while back, exclusive footage from the series was released on Marvel’s D23 panel, with all of the cast members returning.

Those who attended the event received the treat. However, the unfortunates wondered what exactly the images showed. But, some recent tweets from matt ramos, an event attendee revealed some exciting things. One of them is – Loki season 2 could reveal the Council of Kangs.

What is Tweeting?

Matt Ramos, one of D23’s Marvel panel participants, revealed in his tweet that-

‘In the Loki Season 2 footage, Loki carves this [the one behind Judge Renslayer in season 1] wall, and 3 heads are revealed behind it, which refers to the council of the Kangs.

Another tweet from Erik Voss, (of the YouTube channel ‘New Rockstars’) has apparently confirmed this news. His tweet said –

“There’s also a photo where Loki chisels away a mural of the Keepers of Time to reveal a wall of giant golden Kang variant faces.”

What is the Kang Council?

Council of Kangs as shown in Avengers (1963) #292

The Council of Kangs, in Marvel Comics, is a group of variant Kangs led by Prime Kang (Otherland’s first Kang, Nathaniel Richards). Immortus, one of the older variants of Kang, tricked Prime Kang into eliminating all Divergent Kangs from the Multiverse. Immortus knew that if Prime Kang did this, it would pave the way for Prime Kang eventually becoming Immortus in the future.

Initially, the Council of Kangs consisted of only three Kangs from different realities to eliminate all other Kangs. But once Kang destroyed his three counterparts, the Council of Kangs reformed – unbeknownst to him – consisting of all of the divergent Kangs. The Kang Council is headquartered in Kang Krossroads in an outer realm called – Limbo.

Council of Kangs made its first appearance in Avengers #267 (1986) and to date the creators have given away a number of iterations of its members. Their sole purpose is the discovery and possession of weapons in the time bubble (an extra-temporal spatio-temporal flow phenomenon, powerful enough to engulf entire universes). Check out our article on the different variants of Kang that are most likely to appear in The Mutant Saga here. There are thousands of Kang members in the Council from different eras, different realities, or just someone posing as a Kang. But some of the notable members include –

  • President Kang
  • Earth Kang 123488.23497
  • Kang of Menzoic Earth-24
  • Kang Raulex, Kaseo and Swaach
  • Kang Nebula (Terminator)
  • Kang Cobra
  • kankong
  • Kang “Orphan”
  • Kang Ransom

They are also known as the Council of Kross-Time Kangs, Cross-Time Kangs, Cross-Time Kangs Corps, Great Council, Kang-Korps, or Kross-Time Kangs Korps.

What does this mean for the MCU?

Jonathan Majors as “The One Who Remains” in Loki

After a shaky Phase 4, MCU’s The Mutant Saga plans to regain some of its lost fan trust. With Jonathan Majors wonderful performance as “The One Who Remains” in Loki’s first season, fans are drooling to see him anymore.

Marvel Studio has already confirmed that Majors will return as Kang in Loki Season 2 and the next Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. And recently it was confirmed that The Mutant Saga will culminate with Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars at the end of phase six in 2025. Therefore, it can be safely assumed that majors will have multiple appearances in multiple projects playing different versions of Kang.

However, if the above reports are true, then the appearance of the Council of Kangs in Loki Season 2 will finally address the issue of the real “Time-Keepers” behind the TVA (Time Variance Authority). Whoever Remains has surely said that he created TVA in order to preserve the sacred timeline and ensure that no branching timelines happen to him. It’s widely believed that He Who Remains is basically the MCU’s counterpart to Immortus. This is perhaps why after creating TVA, he installed the Council of Kangs to administer the operation of TVA.

Whatever the real truth is, it will surely become clearer over time. Marvel will surely release the images to the public soon enough. Then maybe we’ll have more dirt to dig. Until then, peace.
