Once Upon a Small Town Episode 6 begins with a look at Ji-trauma yul and how he lost his parents in a terrible accident many years ago. Back in the present, Ji-yul pulls Ja-young from the wreckage the same way his father did years before.

Ji-yul watches over Ja-young in the hospital while she is unconscious. Just as he is about to take her hand, Sang-hyeon introduces himself and thanks Ji-yul for helping his friend. Ji-yul leaves the hospital looking sad because Sang-hyeon is there, while Ja-young wakes up from her sleep and tells Sang-hyeon that she is fine.

When she asks how he got there, he tells her that Ji-yul informed the police about the accident and helped her get to the hospital. He then mocks her saying that she owes the doctor her kindness. Ji-yul leaves without saying anything when she sees how close she and Sang-hyeon are when he helps her out of the hospital and to her car.

At home, Ja-young tries to say thank you to Ji-yul, but she can’t find the right words. While at the fishery, Sang-hyeon thinks back to the time he saw Ji-yul waiting for him in the hospital parking lot. Ji-yul also came up with her own ideas.

The next day, Ja-boss young takes her away from work so she can rest, and she takes the opportunity to thank Ji-yul for what he did the day before. But Ji-yul isn’t at the vet clinic, so she leaves them popsicles on her way to visit another neighbor. After the events of the last day, Ji-yul went to the columbarium for her parents.

On their way home, Ja-young and Ji-yul pass each other, which is awkward for both of them. After being confused at first, Ja-young begins to thank him for his help, but he has to stop as he receives a very important phone call. As Ja-young looks at Ji-fading yul’s car, Sang-hyeon hugs her and they start talking again about what they did with Majeong. Later, when she brings up what he said about how he feels about her, he happily asks her to think about it more.

Ji-yul goes to an old man’s house to see how his bull is doing. The bull is not well and the man wants Ji-yul to end his suffering by putting him to sleep. The bull hasn’t eaten for a month. On the other hand, when the people of Majeong and Huidong get together that night, a fight breaks out.

The people of Majeong call Ja-young uneducated because she has no parents, but Ji-yul must make the difficult choice to find the right medicine to relieve the bull’s pain and end her suffering. Sang-hyeon tries to help Ja-young, even if only for a short time.

Ji-yul helps the bull cross the road as she walks to clear her head. The old man’s kind words to his longtime friend bring the vet to tears. Later, the man tells Ji-yul about his parents, and it turns out that he was the one who took care of Ji-yul when his parents died. They kind of get along because of the bad things that happened to them, and the old man tells them that the people we lost will always come back to us one way or another.

He finds her sitting by the river and thinks back to when they were kids and Ja-young was his friend and helped him get over the loss of his parents.

Ji-yul and Ja-young look at each other as memories of their childhood resurface. They stand right in front of where they used to hang out.

Once Upon a Small Town Episode 6 Review

Well, now that no one is forced to do anything they don’t want, Episode 6 turned out to be a very heartwarming episode. Most of the audience was probably waiting for Ji-yul to finally remember Ja-young, and I have to say, I really liked how they brought the story to him. I almost started crying when I saw that old man with the bull. It makes sense that he knows about Ji-yul and her relationship with Ja-young all those years ago.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this episode, even though it really brought me to tears.

You can watch Once Upon a Small Time on Netflix.

Production team

In August 2021, Choi Soo-young and Jang Keun-suk were the first two actors to be offered lead roles in the series. It wasn’t until later in September 2021 that it was discovered that it didn’t actually work. It was decided in May 2022 that Choo Young-woo would play the role of Han Ji-yul, a Seoul native veterinarian, and Park Soo-young would play the role of Ahn Ja-young, a local policeman, while the two main characters of the series. Later in May, Baek Seong-cheol was added to the cast as Lee Sang-hyeon, an attractive young farmer.

Because the series was shot in a rural setting and featured animals, the production team took precautions to ensure everyone’s safety throughout the process, from script creation to actual filming. They did this by consulting veterinarians. The entire filming, which included the participation of animals, took place in the company of a trained animal veterinarian and an experienced animal caretaker. Production staff divulged the following information: “All accessories that come into contact with animals have been carefully crafted in silicone to ensure their safety, and anything that could be potentially dangerous has been excluded as much as possible.”
