Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said at a press conference early Wednesday morning that “we believe people have information on the identities of the shooters and we need the public’s help.”
According to statements made by Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Fred Melean at a press conference held at the park directly across from the UChicago Medicine emergency room, two groups of people were at the park just before 8 p.m. hours when a fight broke out between the two groups of people and shots were fired.
Police say when emergency medical services arrived at the scene at East 51st Street and South Champlain Avenue, they transported six people to UChicago Medicine: five men and one woman.
According to Deenihan, more than 40 shell casings were found, but no firearms were discovered. Police have concluded that ‘this is likely a gang-related battle’, but there is not yet enough evidence to determine which gang the victims belonged to or which individuals among them were responsible for the killing . According to Deenihan, there apparently wasn’t much video footage of the shooting.
Police said a 19-year-old man who suffered an injury to his right shoulder was taken to Insight Hospital, where he was assessed and listed as in good condition. Another man, 46, and a woman, 33, both in good condition, went to the emergency room at UChicago Medicine. The man’s right calf and the lady’s right arm both had abrasions.
