‘You support this narrative’: Woman King star Viola Davis says fans who don’t see her film believe ‘black women can’t run the box office’

The female king is a fictionalized next version of the 1823 Dahomey Revolt that dealt with issues like the slave trade. Viola Davis, known for playing the role of Amanda Waller in the suicide squad (2016) will helm the project as the lead actress and she had “unique” perspectives on people who won’t be seen in the upcoming film.

Calling it a way to support racism, Viola Davis further stated that she supports the narrative of black women unable to lead the box office.

Viola Davis wants the film to be more than a “moment”

“But here’s the thing I’m going to add to that: It’s only going to be a while if people don’t come to see the movie. Okay? Because you’re sending a very clear message to a machine called Hollywood… Hollywood is all about green. That’s right, that’s what I do, so if you don’t come see it, you’re sending a message that black women can’t run the global box office.

“You support this narrative. And if you want to normalize it, come see it the same way Black Panther, Iron Man, Spider-Man, any other movie that has none of us in it, or one or two of us in it.

During the recent reveal of the official teaser of The little Mermaid which is an upcoming live-action remake film, many people were unhappy that the role of Ariel was played by Halle Bailey, a non-white American singer. Halle Bailey is one of the many people who suffer from backlash and racism. The news of Viola Davis also urging people to support the anti-racist narrative and break the stereotype that people of color are incapable of holding the top spot at the box office also adds to the controversies above.

The female king tells the story of General Nansisca in the middle of the kingdom of Dahomey in the year 1823 where, a revolt took place against slavery. The film is due out September 16, 2022 in US theaters.
