Director Rian Johnson has admitted what to do Glass onion: a mystery at loggerheads scared him much more than doing Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In 2017, Rian Johnson’s film Star Wars: The Last Jedi release in theaters worldwide. The film was incredibly divisive among fans, but received critical acclaim and became the franchise’s second highest-grossing installment. Even before the film’s release, the director signed on to create a new star wars trilogy which is still in development. For now, however, the director is still busy with his Knives out movies.
Following the release of Star Wars: The Last JediRain Johnson chose to make a smaller murder mystery film titled Knives out. The film became a critical and financial hit and the director opted to move forward with a sequel with Netflix. The film, ultimately titled Glass onion: a mystery at loggerheads was a far more daunting prospect for the director, however.
Speaking to the LA Times, The Last Jedi director admitted that the idea of making a Knives out the sequel was the one that terrified him much more than doing the previous one star wars film:
“No, it’s a very different animal for several reasons. First of all, Last Jedi was actually a real sequel, continuing the events of a movie I didn’t write. With that, first of all, it’s not even really a sequel, it’s kind of like another book, basically another mystery with the same detective. If anything, going into it was a little scarier even than the Star Wars movie, because the first one, when we did it, it was in such a vacuum and we had no idea if people would in this kind of thing. Really, it was just something that I really liked, a genre that I liked, and I’m like, ‘Let’s try this.
And then the fact that people enjoyed it and the fact that it was popular – when you put something out there it happens anyway, but mostly I think in this case – it becomes something in outside of you and you kind of forget how you did it. And so, it was scary. I have never been so nervous as sitting down to write something. I also spent 10 years planning Knives Out, while there I was sort of starting from scratch.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available on all home media formats while Rain Johnson’s upcoming film, Glass onion: a mystery at loggerheads will be available on Netflix on December 23, 2022.
