The recent renewal of the Constantine The film for a sequel has fans everywhere enjoying Keanu Reeves’ return as a superhero in a trench coat. Warner Bros. Discovery opted to greenlight the sequel instead of a reboot with the actor’s growing fame and with Lawrence working on hunger games after; The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents. While the director once tried to keep the movie PG-13 still managed to give the movie an “R” rating, it made him aspire to make a “Hard R” version of the sequel in 2020.

The Hopeful Resurrection of Constantine

Since the film’s release in 2005, Francis Lawrence, Keanu Reeves, his former manager, and Akiva Goldsman, the film’s writer-producer, had all tried to pitch a sequel to WBD. They all wanted to see the supernatural detective back on the big screen with a better take on the story and the character himself.

John Constantine as a character still has a lot to explore, and Lawrence wants to get into his story as a whole. Developments in the comics have also given it a lot of eagerness to create a sequel as is and now that WBD seems to be on their side as well, the Constantine the sequel is in the works and all three are also returning.

Francis Lawrence Wanted An R – movie rated

During their reunion interview for the fifteenth anniversary of Constantine in 2020, Lawrence explained how he worked on the film thinking it was PG-13, but got an R rating instead. Francis Lawrence went on to explain how, given the chance, he would be willing to create a “hard R” version of the sequel one day.

Creative freedom would allow him to explore darker aspects of John Constantine and his history within Detective Comics. The gained popularity of the actor also gives much to look forward to in the role.

Although Lawrence has previously remarked that if it hadn’t been his first film he would have had much more control over the casting and his opinions were accordingly;

“I would have liked him to be, as in matter, blond and English”

Now that Lawrence and Reeves are as famous as they are with their large-scale projects, the sequel, while in the works, can’t be considered an R-rated movie.
