Disney’s Release Date Changes For Their Upcoming Movies Confirm No New star wars The film will be released in theaters until 2025.
In December 2019, Disney and Lucasfilm released the final chapter of the star wars Continuation Trilogy. The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters to very mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, with many looking back on the entire Sequel Trilogy with extremely critical eyes, leaving the state of the franchise on the big screen in a less than stable place. Meanwhile, the first Disney Plus original series The Mandalorianreleased around the same time as Episode IX had received a noticeably more positive reception, with many expressing a sense that the future of the franchise will be through long-form streaming storytelling.
During Disney Investor Day in 2020, it was announced that the first star wars film which will be released in theaters after The Rise of Skywalker like being Rogue Squadron, which had wonder woman Director Patty Jenkins was attached to direct and was slated for a December 2023 release. However, the film was ultimately shelved indefinitely due to “creative differences” and has since been removed from Disney’s upcoming release schedule.
Currently, the next star wars the film is not expected to be released until December 19, 2025. Since this unknown film is unlikely to be that of Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron, some believe this will be the time when the public should expect Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi’s film will be released. Right now the title of this film, along with a second film slated for December 17, 2027, is the next time we should expect to return to the galaxy far, far away on the big screen for some new stories. .
It’s no secret that the star wars fandom has been polarized considerably over the past few years. While the two the force awakens and A thug both received positive reviews (the latter often considered the best of the Disney era), The Last Jedi has since become not only the most controversial entry in franchise history, but one of the most polarizing films of the past decade. And if we take into account the disappointing performance of Solo as well as the collective shrug The Rise of Skywalker from critics and audiences alike, it’s no surprise that Kathleen Kennedy and the team at Lucasfilm are somewhat weary of what the next big-screen outing will be.
By the time the next star wars movie will be supposed to come out, it will be six years since The Rise of Skywalker, and perhaps more puzzled, will have been a full decade since the force awakens was released theatrically and eventually became the highest-grossing film in US history (it still remains at number one to this day). When it comes to new movies, good planning and fresh new stories and characters are probably the way to go, and hopefully bringing audiences back to the galaxy far, far away on the big screen will be exciting again.
After all, former Disney CEO Bob Iger said in 2020 that the slowdown in the release of star wars movies were a priority for Lucasfilm, saying “less is more” for this big-screen franchise, especially when compared to producing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, which have the luxury of distinct comic book characters that can be involved in different kinds of stories.
