What if Loki becomes the Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU?
The Sorcerer Supreme in the The Marvel Universe is set as a “practitioner of the mystical or magical arts who has greater skill than all others or who commands a greater portion of ambient magical energies than any other organism on a given world or “dimension.” In the MCU itself, we’ve seen 3 students of the mystical arts take on the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme including Wong and Doctor Strange. However, what fans don’t know is that there are many more characters in the MCU who have been the Sorcerer Supreme in the comics. This may shock some, but Loki, the God of Mischief, was also once the Sorcerer Supreme.
How Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme
Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme in typical Loki fashion where he tricked Doctor Strange into giving up his title to him. During the Tournament of Sorcerers hosted by Vishanti, Doctor Strange once again defeated all the other participants and wizards. In fact, he had been doing it for the past two decades. However, in a major twist, the Vishanti announced Loki the God of Mischief as the next Sorcerer Supreme. Oddly, Loki not only didn’t defeat Doctor Strange, he didn’t even enter the tournament. Strange refused to believe what was happening and suspected that there was something else at play. However, he had no choice and had to relinquish the title as tradition dictates.
And that’s how Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme. The MCU could also explore such a tournament on the big screen. However, instead of Loki winning by trickery, it would be pretty cool to see him outsmart and defeat the other wizards, possibly including Doctor Strange.
Is there a better Sorcerer Supreme than Doctor Strange?
We’ve certainly seen Doctor Strange surpass several other wizards with more time and experience. For a human being, his control over magic is unseen and unheard of. However, therein lies the problem. At the end of the day, he’s only human. Loki would definitely be the strongest Sorcerer Supreme due to his divine nature. It is more durable and stronger. His body can endure even the most taxing forms of magic and won’t wear out as easily as Doctor Strange.
In the MCU, it seems to be slightly different. Doctor Strange definitely seems more powerful than Loki. This is especially the case when comparing their clashes with Thanos. However, it may also be due to other factors such as Thanos needed Doctor Strange alive for the Time Stone while he could easily get rid of Loki without hesitation. Likewise, while battling Thanos, Doctor Strange was aided by the Guardians, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. The MCU certainly didn’t do Loki justice despite having his own show. His powers in the comics are far superior to those in the MCU. If Loki were to become Sorcerer Supreme for even a short time, it would be a great way to really explore his potential.
What would be his motivations?
In the comic number where he became the Sorcerer Supreme, he wanted to find a spell known as The Exile of Singhsoon. This spell would allow him to strip the entire universe of all its magic and absorb it into himself. In fact, the whole tournament was just an illusion that Loki had created in order to obtain the title of Sorcerer Supreme.
Loki is unpredictable, mischievous, and fun-loving. That would make him a very interesting Sorcerer Supreme. In the MCU, Loki is currently transitioning from villain to hero. As a character, he has shown immense growth but still remains as ambitious as ever. It would be pretty fun to see how he would balance those two sides of himself. All we know for sure is that the story would be chaotic but in the best possible way.
Tournament of Wizards
The Vishanti, who are essentially a trio of supernatural and divine entities who act as patrons of the Sorcerer Supreme and defenders of the Earth Kingdom, hold a tournament for wizards every few decades. During the tournament, wizards compete against each other to prove their mettle. Eventually, the Vishanti announce the next Sorcerer Supreme.
