On Boxing Day 2014, Bavuma played his first Test for South Africa against West Indies. He made history at the 2016 New Year’s Test in Cape Town by being the first colored cricketer to score a century in a test for his nation.
He scored 637 points at an average of 53.08 in his second Supersport season in 2011–12, which ranked him 11th among all point scorers. He finished fifth in the now renamed Sunfoil Series in 2012-13, with a worst average of 31.58. He scored big again in 2013–14, scoring 714 points at an average of 39.66, which helped him move up to sixth on the Sunfoil Series scoring list.
He became a well-known cricket sensation due to his efforts in Supersport season competitions. In the second Test of the series against England, an unbeaten total of 102 was recorded. On September 25, 2016, he played his first ODI for South Africa against Ireland and marked his first ODI century.
He became the first ever people of color from Africa to be named permanent captain of the team when he was named permanent captain of South Africa. Bavuma reached his first T20I half-century on July 24, 2021 against Ireland in the third T20I, scoring 72 of 51 deliveries before being pulled off by Barry McCarthy. Bavuma has been chosen to lead the South African squad at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021.
