Paramount is developing a new film in the world of Cloverfield with JJ Abrams producing through Bad Robot and Babak Anvari coming on board to direct.
The announcement follows the success of Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick. The film will mark the first new entry in the Cloverfield franchise since 2018 The Cloverfield Paradox, which premiered on Netflix. Joining Anvari and Abrams is Joe Barton, who will write the script.
Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen are also attached as producers, while Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves and Drew Goddard are joining the project as executive producers.
Details of Babak Anvari’s novella Cloverfield the project is being kept under wraps, meaning it’s not yet clear if the film is a live-action Cloverfield sequel or a new spin-off in the vein of previous entries 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox.
Babak Anvari has already directed the 2016 horror film Under the Shadow and served as executive producer of the Hulu original series land of monsters. He more recently directed I came for Netflix, which stars George Mackay, Kelly Macdonald and Hugh Bonneville.
the original Cloverfield was directed by Matt Reeves, who serves as the new entry’s executive producer. JJ Abrams was a producer on all Cloverfield movies, so it’s no surprise to see him again for the franchise’s next installment.
The last two Cloverfield the films were developed under different titles and were not shown to be part of the Cloverfield universe until their respective marketing campaigns begin.
