Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is ready to carry Captain America’s torch and shield with his first solo outing – Captain America: New World Order (hereafter referred to as “Cap 4”), in 2024. The film is the fourth installment of the Captain America franchise in the MCU. However, it was recently officially confirmed by Marvel that there will be a new Falcon to accompany our new Cap on his adventures. Let’s take a look at the news.
Who is this new Falcon?
Sam Wilson may be leaving behind his former character from The Falcon, Steve Roger’s Captain America sidekick from Cap 4. Disney+ events The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (TFATWS), showed his struggle to accept this heavy coat. However, at the end of the series, he finally does and dons a new Captain America costume. The series ended with Wilson passing on his old costume to Torres, no longer needing it after becoming the new Captain America. After Torres delivers an inspirational speech, Wilson retrieves his newly acquired shield and leaves behind his mechanical wing suit, marking his complete transformation into his new identity and allowing Torres to become the Falcon.
Talk with Screen Rantsaid Julius Onah, director of Cap 4 –
I’m thrilled, you know, Danny Ramirez, who plays Falcon, he and I go back a bit, so and Anthony is someone I’ve been a big, big fan of as well. So to work with them, first from director to actor, and then to be able to mold those characters and move the relationship forward is amazing. And their relationship is one of my favorites in this movie, it really helps form the emotional core of how Sam has to define himself as Captain America, because he loves this guy. They’re both soldiers, they’re brothers, and their journey, I think, is going to be something that will really resonate with audiences.
Danny Ramirez, who is currently swimming with his success in Top Gun: Maverick recently, is also delighted with the news. Ramirez, even in a separate interview, teased his transition to Falcon, only hinting at the idea that anything can happen in this universe.
The Torres Falcon in Marvel Comics
The character first appeared as Falcon in Captain America: Sam Wilson #6 (2016). Since then, Joaquin Torres has aided Sam in his many deadly adventures. In the comics, Joaquín Torres came to the United States of America with his mother and grandmother when he was six years old. He lived in Sonoita, Arizona and only graduated there. He was a kind-hearted man until he was kidnapped by the Sons of the Serpent, for genetic experimentation.
As a result of the experiment, he was transformed into a hawk/human hybrid using Cap’s avian partner, Red wing. Eventually, Cap saves him. Moving on, Joaquin then decides to help Cap bring down the Serpent Society. Thereupon, Joaquín decides to become Captain America’s sidekick and, therefore, he assumes the role of the Falcon. In the comics, Falcon not only has the ability to fly, but he also has a high regenerative healing factor and also has a psychic connection to the Redwing.
The Falcon in the MCU
In Cap 4, Ramirez and Sam Wilson will be joined by TFATWS alumni Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley and new character Shira Haas as Sabra, an Israeli hero new to the MCU. They will apparently face those of 2008 Incredible Hulk antagonist – The Leader (played by Blake Nelson). Other than our knowledge of Joaquin’s character from TFATWS, we have no other knowledge. It’s all a mystery (as Kevin Feige probably likes it right now). However, there’s still plenty of development in store for the Air Force Lt. in the MCU. Excitement levels are rising for the 2024 release and fans couldn’t be more excited. Julius Onah is set to direct the film, having directed The Cloverfield Paradox and Luce. Until next time, Peace!
