Wonders director Nia DaCosta admits she was annoyed by the A-Force scene in Avengers: Endgame.
One of the most memorable moments of the climactic battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame was the A-Force moment in which much of the heroines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe reunited on screen. The scene included characters like Okoye (Danai Gurira), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Mantis (Pom Klementieff) , Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). Prior to this scene, only Captain Marvel had her own standalone movie, with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) receiving it two years later, and Wonders come out next year.
The A-Force scene in Avengers: Endgame is a bit of a polarizing moment. While some fans appreciate it as fan-service honoring women in the MCU, others see it as open complacency, with nothing more to say than for the franchise to flex their female characters for a few brownie points.
Nia DaCosta, director of Wonders spoke with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming film, in which she acknowledged the A-Force moment in Avengers: Endgame, expressing some annoyance she felt watching him, but for interesting reasons:
“Like many women in the world, I have watched Avengers: Endgame, and had those six seconds of all the Marvel women together. Once I had chills, but I was also very bored. I was like, ‘Two hours of this, please.’ So it was really good that they decided to do a team-up movie with three of my favorite heroes, so that was the most exciting thing.
Nia DaCosta said that while she may have enjoyed the A-Force moment in Avengers: Endgame the first time she saw the film, she felt that it did not live up to what strong female characters deserved. That’s why she’s excited to bring a movie like Wonders on the screen. Hopefully a feature film does its characters justice in a way that presents strong dynamics and stories rather than turning into a gimmick.
