James Mangold shared a look back at Logan after learning that Hugh Jackman is set to play Wolverine again in Dead Pool 3 – and assured fans that Jackman’s return has no impact Logan.
Ryan Reynolds recently took to social media to break the shocking news that Dead Pool 3 would feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. After his last outing as the character of Logan, Hugh Jackman said he was hanging up his claws for good. But, like any great action hero, it looks like he’s been brought out of retirement for one last mission.
The brutal, emotional, R-rated Logan ended with the tragic death of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. In a hilariously straightforward way, James Mangold decided to jog the actor’s memory as to exactly why he previously swore never to play Logan again.
Taking to Twitter to respond to the news, James Mangold first shared a single GIF of the moment Wolverine is fatally impaled in Loganbefore having to clarify later that he wasn’t upset about the character’s return.
While James Mangold’s original tweet only showed Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being killed off by his own clone, leading some fans to assume the director was upset about the character’s return, Mangold later clarified that it was meant to be in good humor. “Everyone relax,” the director wrote, before saying he “can’t wait” to see Jackman and Ryan Reynolds together in Dead Pool 3.

Dead Pool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman responded to Mangold’s tweet with their own messages of appreciation for the Logan director, whom they dubbed the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).
A video recently shared by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman seems to suggest that Dead Pool 3 takes place before Logan – which takes place in the year 2029 – and therefore will not affect the character’s ultimate demise in this film. James Mangold and many fans responding to his tweet also pointed out that this could be a Wolverine from elsewhere in the Marvel Multiverse.
