Early life

Coyle was born on June 15, 1985 in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland to parents Lillian and Niall Coyle. When she was just two years old, her parents realized her gift for singing when they heard her perform “Saturday Night at the Movies” by The Drifters. Although she was not engaged in her schoolwork, Coyle did well academically. She made a demo CD, which she sent to Louis Walsh and The Late Late Show for review. Covers of the songs “Fields of Gold”, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, and “Love Is”, as well as the aria “Summertime”, were included on the CD.

Career

2001: Pop stars

In 2001, when Coyle was still a student at Thornhill College, he tried out for the Irish adaptation of the talent competition reality show Popstars. One of the judges on that show was Louis Walsh. It was eventually discovered that she had lied about her age in order to get into Group Six, but not before she had already earned a place in the group. She was only 16, two years younger than the minimum age requirement of 18, which was 18. Coyle claimed that RTÉ had “exploited” her in some way. She enrolled at Thornhill College in Derry on her return.

2002–2009: Girls Aloud

Walsh persuaded Coyle to take part in Popstars: The Rivals, which is the second UK series in the Popstars franchise to air internationally. The aim of the competition was to choose a group of boys and a group of women, each consisting of five members, who would then face off in “a battle of the sexes” to see who could claim the top spot on the UK Singles Chart during the holiday season. Thousands and thousands of hopefuls showed up at auditions spread across the UK in the hope that they would be chosen. The three judges, Geri Halliwell, Pete Waterman and Walsh, each selected ten boys and ten girls to compete in the final round. After that, these finalists took the stage and participated in the weekly live performances that took place on Saturday evenings (alternating weekly between girls and boys). After finishing her performance of “Walsh told her her ‘performance of the night’ was ‘Fields of Gold,’ which she had just performed. Stole the show for me,” while another judge, Halliwell, commented that she “would love to buy just one of yours already”.

Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh are the other members of the new girl group Girls Aloud, which was founded on November 30, 2002 through the show by popular vote. Coyle is the fifth member of the band. The band’s debut single, “Sound of the Underground”, became the UK’s most popular song during the 2002 holiday season after reaching the highest possible position on the UK Singles Chart. The time it took for Aloud to climb to number one after the band’s founding is the fastest on record. In May 2003, the band released their first studio album, titled Sound of the Underground. The album debuted at number two on the charts and was later awarded platinum certification by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) later that same year. They reached number one on the charts with the singles “I’ll Stand by You”, “Walk This Way”, and “The Promise”. Their greatest hits album, titled The Sound of Girls Aloud, and their 2008 album, titled Out of Control, both debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. The first of these two albums sold over a million copies, while the second sold less than half that amount. Additionally, they have seven albums which have been certified by the RIAA and have been nominated for five Brit Awards, winning “Best Single” in 2009 for “The Promise”.

Pop music is the band’s signature sound, although during their career they have also explored electropop and dance-pop as musical avenues to explore. Girls Aloud received praise from music critics for their creative approach to popular pop music, which was facilitated by the band’s collaborations with Brian Higgins and his songwriting and production team, Xenomania. By May 2010, the group had amassed a fortune of thirty million pounds, making them one of the most successful performers to emerge from the realm of reality TV in the UK. They are recognized as the “Most Successful Reality Group” in the Guinness World Records edition which was released in 2007. They also have the record for “Most Consecutive Top Ten Entries in the UK by a Female Group” of the 2008 edition., and they are again recognized for the “most successful reality group” of the 2011 edition. Both of these records were set in the United Kingdom. With over 4.3 million singles sold and 4 million albums sold in the UK alone, the group have been recognized as the UK’s best-selling girl group of the 21st century.

Private life

Coyle had a cancer scare when she detected a breast tumor when she was 17.

Coyle moved all of her possessions from Northern Ireland to Los Angeles, California in 2006. This led to her shuttling between the United States and the United Kingdom for her efforts with Girls Aloud and as a solo artist. While living in Los Angeles, Coyle opened an Irish bar and restaurant in Sunset Beach, California, named Nadine’s Irish Mist in 2008 as a family business, which would allow family members to live near her and help her run the business. According to the 2013 Sunday Times Rich List, his estimated worth was £6 million at the time.

On August 15, 2013, Coyle announced on her Instagram account that she was expecting a child. She also revealed her reconnection with ex-fiancé Jason Bell, who is the father of her baby. Their daughter, Anaíya Bell, was born on February 10, 2014.

Coyle returned to Northern Ireland in 2015 to raise her daughter Anaya after closing Nadine’s Irish Mist in Los Angeles in 2015. The restaurant had been in business for nine years. She said she decided to close the restaurant as the business was gradually weighing on her busy family members and she was tired of being approached by film and television directors who wanted to use the restaurant to their projects. She also mentioned that she felt nostalgic for Northern Ireland while residing in Los Angeles.

Coyle and Bell separated in 2019 “because of their increasingly distant lives”, as Bell remained in the United States while Coyle returned to Northern Ireland. Nonetheless, in 2021, Bell and Anaya were living together in Northern Ireland so that Bell could share parental responsibilities for Anaya despite the COVID-19 outbreak.
