Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson are set to lead the cast of the next Dunes prequel series from HBO Max and Legendary Television.
The casting process for Dune: brotherhood officially began as Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson boarded the HBO Max series as Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen, the two women behind the Bene Gesserit. The series, based on the 2012 novel Brotherhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, is set thousands of years before the events of Frank Herbert’s main film. Dunes screenplay with Paul Atreides.
Diane Ademu-John is credited as creator, writer, co-host and executive producer of Dune: brotherhood while Alison Schapker serves as co-showrunner and executive producer. Johan Renck, one of the directors of the critically acclaimed HBO series Chernobyldirects the pilot.
Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, Cait Collins and Brian Herbert are the executive producers of Dune: brotherhood. Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert are also on board as executive producers, overseeing the Frank Herbert Estate project. Author Kevin J. Anderson serves as co-producer.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, Dunes opened in October 2021. The film earned $401.8 million at the worldwide box office before winning six Oscars at the 94th Academy Awards. The TV prequel officially greenlit a few weeks after the ceremony.

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the sole producer of a valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among noble families. Following the betrayal of Paul and his family, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control over Arrakis.
Dunes stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and David Dastmalchian.
