Private life
Marriage and family
Francesca met her future husband, James Hetfield, while working as a clothing designer for Metallica. They started dating soon after they met, although James himself admitted that his behavior early in their relationship was “embarrassing” for both of them, as he was prone to destructive and impulsive tendencies.
However, Francesca helped james to put those traits behind him and overcome his toxic behavior: “She helped me grow a lot,” he would later say. After dating for five years, Francesca and James were married on August 17, 1997. They welcomed their eldest daughter, Cali Tee, on June 13, 1998, and their son Castor Virgil was born on May 18, 2000. Their youngest daughter Marcella Francesca is born on January 17, 2002.
Way of life
Francesca Hetfield, her husband and children currently live in her hometown of Vail, Colorado. The family moved there in 2016 after growing tired of the hectic lifestyle of their former Bay Area California home.
Francesca’s husband James also said he prefers living in Colorado because it allows him to enjoy the outdoors, be closer to nature and distance him from “elitism”: “I’ve had enough of the Bay Area, from the attitude of the people there, a little ‘.
He pointed out that despite his love for the ocean, he couldn’t live there anymore: “(I was) starting to feel like I was fighting all the time, and I just had to get out of my head. So Colorado is doing it for me.
The Hetfields’ new home in Vail is also a good fit for his family, especially Francesca who has returned to live in her hometown after more than two decades. Along with embracing a simple lifestyle, the Hetfield family also travels often to Argentina, staying at Francesca’s family ranch in Patagonia.
Who is Francesca’s husband, James Hetfield?
The main reason why Francesca became famous is her marriage to James Hetfield, who is most famous for being the singer and guitarist of Metallica. He was born on August 3, 1863 in Downey, California.
James Hetfield’s childhood is out of the ordinary in many ways.
His family was made up of Christian Science practitioners, which meant that they rejected the use of modern medicine, as they firmly believed in the power of their faith to heal any type of disease. James’ father, Virgil Lee Hetfield – who worked as a truck driver – left the family when his son was 13.
Virgil’s abandonment affected James a lot. As he claimed Playboy in 2001, he didn’t even know his parents had separated until his mother told him the true nature of his father’s extended “business trip” years later: “It was hidden that he was gone. Eventually my mum said ‘dad won’t be coming back’ and it was quite difficult.’
James’ mother Cynthia Bassett is a former opera singer – sadly she died of cancer when her son was 16. She was diagnosed with this disease two years before her death, although she never received treatment as dictated by the rules of her religion. James was then left to live with David, his older half-brother.
Despite the struggles of his early years, James has been driven by music since childhood. After learning to play the piano at age nine, he later learned to play drums and guitar as well. James was a loyal fan of Aerosmith, a band he first saw live in 1978. The experience was unforgettable for him, as it became his inspiration and the reason he decided to choose music as a career.
James Hetfield attended Downey High School until his second year, leaving school when his mother Cynthia died. He eventually enrolled in Brea Olinda High School in 1981.
Career
In April 1981, James replied to an advertisement posted by drummer Lars Ulrich, stating that he was looking for people to form a band. James was immediately recruited by Lars, and only six months after they first met, Metallica – with the addition of other members – was officially formed.
The band’s first song titled “Hit the Lights” was included on the compilation album “Metal Massacre” – in this track James was credited as rhythm guitarist, bassist and vocalist. Metallica’s first demo was titled “Power Metal”, which also helped the band gain popularity on said metal subgenre of the same name during their early years. In 1984 people started calling their sound thrash metal.
Metallica planned to release their debut album, “Metal Up Your Ass” in May 1983, however, their label Megaforce Records rejected the name and had them change it. The album was finally released in June of that year as “Kill ‘Em All”, which was followed by “Ride The Lightning” soon after. Both productions helped the band gain prominence on the metal scene and caught the attention of major music labels.

After the release of “Creeping Death” as a single in November 1984, Metallica began their first international tour in Europe. Then in March 1986 the band released “Masters of Puppets”, which became a certified gold album later that year, then toured the United States, although as James’ wrist was injured, his guitar playing was temporarily replaced by that of John Marshall.
In 1988, Metallica released their follow-up album “…And Justice For All”, which earned them their first Grammy Award nomination, and became their first number one on Billboard.
Metallica released their next albums “Load” in 1996 and “Reload” the following year, but it wasn’t until several years without new music that the band released the album “St. Anger” in 2003, followed by five years later by “Death Magnetic”.
In 2009, the band was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Metallica’s latest album “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct” was released in 2016.
Fight against addictions
In addition to dealing with anger issues, James Hetfield struggled with addictions for several years, which led him to attend rehab programs twice in his life.
In 2001, he went on a hunting trip to Siberia and was absent from his son’s birthday. This trip was prompted by his lack of self-control stemming from alcoholism. It also caused his wife Francesca to throw him out of the house when he returned from his trip.
Finding himself alone and away from his family, James sought professional help: “Fear was a big motivation for me. Losing my family is what scared me the most, it’s the bottom I’ve touched.
Although Francesca’s decision may seem difficult to some, she helped James get out of his path of addiction, for for which he is grateful: ‘She surfed the big waves with me. We have been through extremely difficult things and we have come out of it stronger. She’s been stuck with me all hell.
After rehab, James was able to repair his relationship with Francesca and the rest of her family. He also came out as straight X, a move that kept him away from his alcoholism for several years. Unfortunately, in 2019, James went back to his old ways with his addiction, prompting his return to rehab and the cancellation of Metallica’s tour across Australia.
Much to the delight of his fans, James once again overcame his addiction and made a public appearance in January 2020.
