Margot Robbie shared her thoughts on Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn in Joker: Madness for two.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. announced that Lady Gaga has joined the cast of the upcoming Joker sequel, subtitled Madness for two. Gaga is set to star alongside Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, with the singer-turned-actress playing Harley Quinn, the Joker’s iconic love interest. She is the second actress to play Harley Quinn in live-action after Margot Robbie.
While making the press rounds for his new film amsterdam, Margot Robbie spoke to MTV News and commented on Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn casting. Robbie expressed his excitement at seeing Gaga as the iconic DC Comics character in the Joker after.
“It makes me so happy because I said from the start, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always happens, you know , from great actor to great movie actor. And it’s kind of like somebody doing their Batman or somebody doing their Macbeth or somebody else, you know?
Margot Robbie then compared the situation to her casting as Queen Elizabeth I in 2018 Mary Queen of Scotsas that role was also played by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.
“And I feel like in a few cases it’s female characters. Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, I also had a crack, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow, Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I’m getting there.’ It’s such an honor to have built a strong enough foundation that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors can play, and I think she’s going to do something amazing with that.
Todd Phillips directs Joker: Madness for two, working from a screenplay he co-wrote alongside Scott Silver. The film’s cast also includes Brendan Gleeson and Zazie Beetz. Production is expected to begin in December for release in October 2024.
