Sandman Creator Neil Gaiman Wants Jenna Coleman’s Johanna Constantine Spinoff Series: ‘That Would Be a Good Idea’

Neil Gaiman’s adaptation The sand man is probably one of the most successful live-action adaptations of source material we’ve ever seen. The sand man received praise from critics and fans alike for its casting, production, consistency with the source material, and Tom Sturridge’s brilliant performance as Dream.

However, it wasn’t just Sturridge’s performance that caught the public’s attention. Jenna Coleman, who plays the gender-swapped version of John Constantine named Johanna Constantine, also received plaudits, and it seems Gaiman is more into her character.

Neil Gaiman interested in a Johanna Constantine spin-off

The sand man is one of Netflix’s biggest TV shows this year, claiming the No. 1 spot globally on Netflix’s Top 10 Titles, and it has been watched for 69.5 million hours! It would make sense for WB and DC Entertainment to engage in discussions about a spinoff series tied to the show.

If it’s entirely true that Lady Johanna has been around in the comics for sand man, The character of Jenna Coleman (who plays both) should not be confused with Johanna Constantine, who is related by descent to the former.

Johanna Constantine is only here to replace the character of John Constantine, as the latter is expected to make an appearance in the ensemble drama soon. justice league dark, which will also feature several other iconic characters.

Jenna Coleman recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about her role in Neil Gaiman The sand man. Interestingly, they got to a point where Coleman revealed that an upcoming spin-off series based on Johanna Constantine has received attention and support from Gaiman himself!

The 36-year-old actress describes the time she spent playing the character and further reveals-

“One of the reasons why I wanted [play Constantine] was that the character felt so formed, and what was really thoughtful of Neil and Allan [Heinberg] it’s that they sent me the script, but they didn’t tell me who the character was. So I didn’t know it was Constantin when I read it.

“So I formed my own thoughts of who this person was without having any preconceived notions of Constantine beforehand, which was really smart. But yeah, Neil filled me in [about calls for a spin-off]. He and Allan are really behind this. They seem to think that would be a good idea.

There you go, Gaiman seems to be all for the idea, but it’s going to take a really good pitch for WB to move on and spend a new budget on the Johanna spin-off TV series/movie.

Is the sandman awake? Here’s what Neil Gaiman has to say

The sand man is one of Neil Gaiman’s finest works that he can be comfortably proud of, and the TV series adaptation only adds to the legacy the comic wants to leave behind.

However, The sand man isn’t exactly without criticism, and one of the most notable negatives fans have pointed out about the TV series is that it’s too “woke”. It’s important to note that most of the comments about the show being “woke” come after the decision to cast black actors for roles of characters who were originally white in the comics.

So what would Neil Gaiman have to say about it? During an interview with Times Radio, the 61-year-old English author opened up about all the criticism the show has received for being too “woke”-

“When people accuse me of being ‘woke’ in quotes for some Sandman stuff I wrote 35 years ago, I– it’s like, ‘Well, yeah.’

“I remember when instead of calling it ‘woke’ they called it ‘political correctness’. And then you talk about ‘political correctness gone crazy’. And I remember once reading a book where they started talking about political correctness and how you can’t make jokes about people’s ethnicity or religion the same way anymore. And I thought, well, actually, that’s just – this is not ‘political correctness’, it’s just ‘treating others with respect’.

It’s still one of the oldest rabbit hole cases when it comes to salty fans (and racists) overly concerned about a person of color playing a white character, and Gaiman didn’t nothing to prove to them.

The sand man is currently available to stream on Netflix.
