‘Related By Blood’ Jasper Wiese Brother Kobus Wiese and Parents

Jasper is one of the most popular players in the league. He has experience in many rugby leagues inside and outside his country. He has previously played for the Free State XV in the Rugby Challenge, the Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup and the Cheetahs in the Pro14. In 2021 he made his debut for South Africa, and a year later won Premiership Rugby, scoring a try in the Championship game and earning man of the match honours.

The beginning

Wiese was a member of the Grant Khomo Week Under-16 squad in 2011 for the Queenstown-based competition. He first became a rugby player while attending and competing for Horskool Upington. As a result, Griquas Country districts received provincial orders in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

He started all three of them, scoring two tries in their 36-15 win over Border Country Districts in their second game and one against Namibia in their third game. The following year, Wiese was a member of the Griquas Country Districts squad that took part in Craven Week Under-18s, South Africa’s premier high school rugby union competition, held in Port Elizabeth.

After graduating from high school, Wiese moved to Bloemfontein, where he joined the Free State Cheetahs program and the CUT Ixias varsity team. Wiese started all three games for his side at Craven Week Under-18 in 2013 where he scored two tries. He played four times in the group stages of the 2014 Varsity Shield competition for CUT.

His team won the competition that year, beating UKZN Impi in the league game, and were later promoted to the Varsity Cup for 2015. Wiese took part in the Provincial Under-19 Championship in the second half of the season for the Free State U19 team.

National recognition

In preparation for the 2015 Rugby World Under-20 Championship, Wiese was invited to try out for the South Africa Under-20 team. However, he was dropped from the announced practice squad a week later. He did not play for Free State XV in the 2015 Vodacom Cup nor for CUT Ixias in the 2015 Varsity Cup.

He scored tries in matches against UP Tuks and NMMU Madibaz, helping his team finish in sixth place. Later, Wiese joined the Free State XV team for their Currie Cup qualifying campaign after the Varsity Cup.

Wiese was a member of the Cheetahs Super Rugby training squad at the end of 2016 but was also announced to join the Griffons after his Varsity Cup commitments ended. He was part of the team until the start of the 2020 season.

England’s debut in Premiership Rugby

2020 was a huge turning point in his career. Wiese’s move to England to play for Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby from the 2020-21 season was confirmed on July 23, 2020.

Wiese was selected for the Springboks squad on June 5, 2021, ahead of their Test series against the British and Irish Lions. On July 2, 2021, against Georgia, he made his South African debut as a substitute.
