In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there weren’t many female characters to represent their power on screen. Scarlett Johansson spoke to SiriusXM on female representation in Hollywood and the MCU where she complimented her co-star and admitted that Elizabeth Olsen’s performance put her to shame.
“It was so awesome when Lizzie came in because, you know, we had [Colby Smulders.] It was basically the two of us holding the fort. And then when Lizzie came in, she semi-balanced,” Johansson said. “It was very heavy on testosterone for a very long time, and now it’s like…it’s calibrated.”
The actress further stated her respect for Elizabeth Olsen as the latter actress’ job was more physically demanding with a professional work ethic and the warm smile the Scarlet Witch was able to put on her face throughout filming.
“What she was doing was so difficult. Even the physics of what she was doing was so difficult that I was working with her, and I was amazed at what she was creating out of nothing. That she created this together…again, that physicality. And her character has such a sensuality to her, and she has such a passion,” she said. “I was amazed by it. It made me ashamed.
Following the power buff that Wanda Maximoff was able to obtain throughout the current MCU, many other heroines were added to the universe to showcase the awesome powers they contained.

In a 2015 interview with Variety, Elizabeth Olsen showered Joss Whedon with compliments for her ability to fit powerful female characters into the fold. She revealed that Whedon was able to freely adapt Wanda from the comics as he is a big fan of the character and that she was grateful that a strong presence (other than herself) was present during the filming of the film.
Due to her bad luck, Elizabeth Olsen often had to shoot alone on the sets without the presence of Scarlett Johansson. The actress revealed that she felt like the only female member present in the MCU during this time. Largely thanks to the comics and the fans, Wanda Maximoff has become one of the classic icons of pop culture, as fans appreciate Elizabeth Olsen for all her dedication and the hardships she had to endure along the journey. .
