Tom Felton rose to prominence as a child actor in the film adaptations of JK Rowling’s epic fantasy novels, The Harry Potter series. What began as an inspirational story for cross-generational fans and launched the careers of many was later overshadowed by the author’s intolerant and dogmatic views. In the years that followed, child actors who grew up in the world of Harry Potter each has walked away from any association with JK Rowling, with Tom Felton being the latest among the ever-growing list.

The rise of Tom Felton and the fall of JK Rowling
Within the Harry Potter universe, Tom Felton emulated the role of Draco Malfoy in all his evil yet tragic glory. The young wizard of Slytherin house was created as an inherited child and as such, Felton built the character’s portrayal to his antagonistic future before he succumbed to dutiful fate. Praised and acclaimed for his role in films, the British actor grew to have a reputation mostly defined by Harry Potter with few illustrious careers to show for himself, other than his relatively prominent role on CW’s The flash.

Recently, however, Tom Felton re-emerged in the public eye when the actor spoke out publicly against the author of the franchise that gave him his early fame and established his career among Hollywood’s elite. JK Rowling has been talked about for her many outspoken and unpopular opinions that are inherently transphobic and demeaning and subvert the identity of an entire community.

In a recent interview with The Independent promote the launch of his new memoirs, Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Chaos of a Sorcerer’s Growthactor Tom Felton recalls his childhood on the sets of Harry Potter films and the author who gave the genesis.
“As much Jo is the founder of [these] stories, she wasn’t part of the filmmaking process as much as some people might think. I think I only remember seeing her once or twice on set.

But that’s not the only memory he remembers from his days as a child actor. Tom Felton shares what it was like to get a role at the age of seven and have to relearn how to audition in today’s cutthroat world. But all that aside, bigger things are on the actor’s mind as he directly addresses author JK Rowling’s controversial transgender comments.
“First of all, I don’t know enough about the details of what someone said. My dog takes way too long for me to address such issues. I mean, the obvious things to say are that I’m pro-choice, pro-discussion, pro-human rights in all areas, and pro-love. And anything other than those things, I don’t really have a lot of time for that.
Honestly, with my friends, we all have differing opinions on various topics and we celebrate our own choices. We certainly take no pleasure in singling out people who may have said things we disagree with.
