Why did Rhaenyra Targaryen give birth to a baby dragon?

House of the Dragon was a roller coaster ride with betrayals, murders, incest and a sad miscarriage. The latest was suffered by Rhaenyra Targaryen as she attempted to give birth to her sixth child. Now newly released photos have revealed dragon features on the baby. So this begs the question: why and how did Rhaenyra give birth to a deformed baby dragon? Let’s explore.

Taking to Instagram, Barrie Gower, the show’s prosthetic designer, shared photos of Rhaenyra’s Aborted Baby. Photos show that the baby is gray and has a large pointed head with scales on its back. In the books, the baby was a girl and Rhaenyra named her Visenya.

This is the second time we’ve seen a baby born by a Targaryen woman with dragon features. Game of Thrones viewers will recall that Daenerys Targaryen’s aborted baby Rhaego is said to have dragon wings. So that makes us wonder: are the Targaryens really dragons?

Are Targaryen’s dragons really in human form?

In light of the images released by the prosthetic designer, various theories have been circulating about the Targs. A popular theory is that Targaryen babies start out as dragons in the womb, then grow into humans when they reach full term.

Many fans believe that Targaryens used blood magic to bind dragons to get those apex predators to accept them as riders. And it’s possible that this magic caused the Targs to start as dragons in the womb. We now have 2 incidents that prove it. Maybe it lets the dragons know that they are essentially relatives.

Also, even though Targs aren’t heat resistant, they have a higher heat tolerance and it could be because of that. Several Targaryen in the books refer to themselves as dragon’s blood and some even seriously think they are dragons in human form. And now it looks like it might be true.

What do you think? Are the Targaryens really dragons?
