Quentin Tarantino is an outstanding director. The acclaimed director is behind critically acclaimed classic movies like Django Unchained, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and more. So if anyone has earned the right to comment on movies, it’s him. And he’s made his views known on popular franchises like Marvel and DC known many times before. But what will shock you are his opinions on another mega movie franchise, Star Wars. Read on to find out what he thinks about it.
Quention Tarantino doesn’t want to work with Marvel and DC
Tarantino talked about how big blockbusters like Star Wars and Marvel dominate the box office and make it hard for original movies to make money. He revealed his frustration at seeing original content being overlooked for these mega franchises that dominate every aspect of public discourse. As such, he expressed that he felt at war with them. Now, in a recent interview with LA Times, the acclaimed director had this to say regarding his work at Marvel and DC:
“You have to be a mercenary to do that… I’m not a mercenary. I’m not looking for a job”
Tarantino isn’t the only one with his own take on these popular cinematic universes. In 2019, Martin Scorsese said he thought Marvel movies weren’t movies, but more like theme parks. Fans had erupted in anger, and many MCU actors had also come to the franchise’s defense.
But such criticism doesn’t deter other acclaimed directors from working with Marvel. Many visionaries understand that Kevin Feige has a particular vision of a unified cinematic universe. And sometimes creative sacrifices have to be made to bring that idea to life. However, in the same interview, he says something about Star Wars that will surprise you.
Quentin Tarantino comments on Star Wars
In the same LA Times interview where Tarantino dissed Marvel and DC, he has nothing but good things to say about George Lucas’ Star Wars. He says:
“Of course, I liked ‘Star Wars.’ What’s not to like?” Tarantino said. “But I remember – and it’s not a ‘but’ in a negative sense, but in a good way. The movie completely blew me away and I was rocking with these characters…. When the lights came on, I felt like a million bucks. And I looked around and had this moment of recognition, thinking, ‘Wow! What a moment at the cinema! »
The big difference in his commentary on Marvel and star wars is interesting, but not unexpected. Star Wars was revolutionary for its time. Its plot, theme, and special effects ushered in a new era of storytelling. However, with the way the franchise is run by Disney, it doesn’t look like we’ll get that golden age back.
