2016: the intermediary between batman versus superman and Justice League witnessed a small group of anti-heroes, dubbed the Suicide Squad (how unironically) take over the DCEU world. But the film, as quirky and colorful in its own way, wasn’t bold enough to become a legacy like Zack Snyder’s canonical work. Although praised for its ambitious potential, the end result was somewhat disappointing.
After 6 years of endless bickering and shouting, audiences can once again peek behind the curtain to find out what ended up on the editing room floor instead of on the screens.

suicide squad‘s Ayer Cut finds an outlet after 6 years
Following in the footsteps of the godfather Snyder himself, director David Ayer had spoken of the creative differences that arose between the production house and the director’s vision. Consequently, the version which constituted suicide squad in Ayer’s opinion, this was not what ended up being shown on screen. The crowd, fueled by outrage over Zack Snyder’s exit and Joss Whedon’s slaughter of the greatness of the SnyderVerse, picked up another catchphrase to chant at WB.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut The move has been a staple of the DCEU x WB era for as much as #ReleaseTheSnyderVerse has been. But while the latter gets his fair share of exposure and justice, Ayer’s vision remains very murky – until now.

One of the Ayer Cut movement’s Twitter admins recently had the honor of witnessing 37 seconds of additional footage that has never been shown before. Whether that makes up for the 6-year wait is debatable, though it does show a remarkable display of unchecked madness as Joker and his crew attack Arkham Asylum.
This in no way contributes to the unforgivable negligence to which the Clown Prince of Crime has been subjected in suicide squad but eases the pain somewhat by leaving the door open for more of Jared Leto’s unusual and controversial take on the Joker.
Will the Ayer Cut find a home in DCU after the Twitter stunt?
The fun thing about Warner Bros. and of the DC Films franchise is that their original vision delivered a fleeting era of cutting-edge cinema before being ripped off by their own management, not replacing it with something more profitable. Walter Hamada’s inadequacy as president not only suspended the DCEU in limbo for years, but the CBM franchise risked losing its key players for good (regarding the Henry Cavill and Ray Fisher controversies).
But the advent of a new dawn at Warner Bros. Discovery and David Zaslav’s dream of quality over quantity give DC a chance to stand tall again. It also means that David Ayer’s recent Twitter stunt could create unnecessary problems for Zaslav when he is already operating in a total teardown and rebuilding phase. And we’re already familiar with the fact that the CEO shamelessly cuts and reneges on projects that don’t fit his vision.

However, the newly released scene also shows the potential the DCEU had displayed before the tragic defiance of creative authority brought about the downfall of the franchise. If Zaslav gives the Ayer Cut a nod, his talk of quality over quantity will find common ground. Given that James Gunn now controls the DC Films narrative and how closely tied he is to the suicide squad arc, it might be interesting to see Ayer’s vision return and how Gunn plans to use the new plot angle in the aftermath of its release.
suicide squad is now streaming on HBO Max.
