The Australian actor has played the role of Logan, aka Wolverine, for 17 years. But did you know that Hugh Jackman had absolutely no idea what exactly a Wolverine was when he first played the role in Bryan Singer’s 2000 film, x-men?
Well the Logan star was completely lost on the origins of the character on the set of the very first x-men movie, as he admitted to knowing nothing about Wolverine and his portrayal in Marvel comics.
Hugh Jackman Had No Idea About Wolverine’s Origins
In 2018, Hugh Jackman appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where, when asked about his work in the 2000 film in the X-men franchise, he revealed he didn’t even know “what a Wolverine was” and believed that his character came from wolves.
“I didn’t know what a Wolverine was and had never heard of such an animal.” Jackman said, explaining how he had come to assume it was a wolf instead. “And I studied wolves, “ he said, saying that was all he knew about his character.

Jackman even recalled the time on set when he was about to shoot a fight scene, during which he practiced wolf-like body movements by doing things like sniffing the ground. And that’s when the director approached him, after which the Van Helsing the star’s misconception about her character has been clarified.
“I spent hours and I came on set for a fight rehearsal and I was just incorporating some of that, you know, wolves always have their noses to the ground and always look kindly into their eyes because they feel you. And the director says, ‘Yeah uh… What are you doing man, with the body?’ I said, ‘Come here, like, I was thinking, you know, I was working on wolves… And he said, ‘Wolves? Why wolves? You are playing a Wolverine. And I say, ‘Well, it’s not an animal.’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, it’s like going to the zoo.’ ”
The actor of the 2017 film, The greatest showman noticed how “humiliating” this moment was for him, but at the same time, he seemed to have a good laugh about it himself.

Jackman announced his departure from the role of the mercurial mutant after his 2017 film, Logan, claiming that he would no longer be considered Wolverine. But surprisingly for fans, he reprized the role a while ago with his superhuman character set to make a thrilling return in the third installment of dead Pool alongside Ryan Reynolds’ superhero of the same name.
