Kathy Griffin was suspended by Twitter on Sunday after changing her handle to “Elon Musk,” join a flood of celebrities who have changed their display names to protest Twitter’s new CEO.
The comedian’s account was suspended after she changed her display name and photo to match the Twitter owner, after which she flaunted her new look asking people to #VoteBlue and check out Twitter rival Mastodon.

Kathy Griffin was suspended from Twitter for impersonating Elon Musk
On Sunday, Elon Musk said Twitter would permanently suspend any account impersonating another. The platform’s new owner issued the warning after some celebrities changed their Twitter display names – not account names – and tweeted like ‘Elon Musk’ in response to the billionaire’s decision to offer verified accounts to all comers for $8 a month while laying off much of the workforce.
“Going forward, all Twitter accounts that engage in impersonation without clearly specifying the ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended,” Elon Musk tweeted. While Twitter previously offered warnings before suspensions, now that “widespread verification” is being implemented, “there will be no warning.”
In reality, “no name change at all” would require the temporary loss of a confirmed tick, according to the world’s richest man. Kathy Griffin’s account was terminated on Sunday after changing her screen name to Musk. She admitted in an interview that she also used her profile picture.

Actress Valerie Bertinelli used Elon Musk’s screen name in a similar fashion, tweeting in favor of the Democratic candidates on Saturday before reverting to her real identity. “Okey-dokey. “I had a great time, and I hope I made my point,” she tweeted later.

Musk thinks $8 verified accounts are his approach to democratizing the service. The users who “Register today” for the new “Twitter Blue with verification” can get the blue tick next to their name “just like the celebrities, businesses and politicians you currently follow,” according to a Twitter update for iOS devices featured on Apple’s App Store on Saturday. He said the service will first be available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The comedian, who is known to be friends with Amber Heard, went on the offensive immediately after the pro-Depp judgment in Virginia, during an appearance on “Just ask the question with Brian Karem,” when she shouted accusations at Johnny Depp and his legion of fans.
She specifically poked fun at his appearance, comparing him to Trump and saying he now looks like a “inflated bag of alcohol”, despite what his admirers may think. Kathy Griffin also pointed out her voice and speaking style, saying it was a fake performance and she’s surprised anyone believes it.

Kathy Griffin didn’t stop there; she later offered direct support to Heard, saying she believed in his account of alleged abuse despite a jury’s verdict, and even followed in Heard’s footsteps by bringing up allegedly old Johnny Depp allegations.
