Robert Downey Jr. is a beloved name for anyone who considers themselves a fan of Marvels. The actor who made a name for himself in the news for his character Tony Stark in the Iron Man franchise reportedly injured himself while filming a stunt scene for the climax of the Iron Man franchise’s latest installment, at to know Iron man 3.

Production on the film halted following the injury, for which time was needed for the titular character’s healing period. Later, it appeared to producers that the injury, while serious, helped the film’s production by giving them the time and space to make necessary changes.

Robert Downey Jr.’s reaction to the injury

It’s no surprise that actors performing stunt scenes are prone to injury from time to time. Whether it’s Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained or Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Falloutthe chances of not getting hurt in a stunt scene are not very favorable.

Although what seems rare is the injury of an actor who goes to the final cut of the film. As stated by the book The History of Marvel Studios: The Creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor fell harder on his ankle than he was supposed to, injuring him. This instance caused production to be halted for a few weeks and even when he returned, Downey Jr. was not fully healed.

Downey Jr., despite the severity of the injury, seemed unimpressed. The actor, in his interview with Entertainment Tonight, casually mentioned that the ankle injury was not a big deal for him. The actor’s ability to sustain such injuries easily portrays the dedication he has to his character.

How did the injury help the production?

The film’s producer, Stephen Broussard has revealed that Robert Downey Jr.’s ankle injury proved to be a help rather than a hindrance in the film’s production. The production shutdown allowed Broussard, director Shawn Black, and co-writer Drew Pearce to make changes and improve the film’s third act.

“We suddenly had the space and the time to figure it out,” said Broussard.

On top of that, the hiatus came in handy to include Brian Tyler as Iron Man 3′s composer, who over time, worked a better job on the score for the film.
