The Oscars return for the 95e time and bring talk show host Jimmy Kimmel with them. This is the third time Jimmy Kimmel will be seen taking center stage at the Oscars, having hosted the ceremony in 2017 and 2018.
In recent years, the Oscars have seen a sharp drop in viewership. Approaching Jimmy Kimmel might be just what the awards show needs to rekindle its past glory, as he’s a familiar face and has experience hosting the Oscars, as well as the Emmys. However, the Internet is divided after hearing the news, not a proper fifty-fifty division. The majority of viewers took to Twitter to express their disappointment.

The Oscars will see Jimmy Kimmel as host
The upcoming 2023 Oscars will see Jimmy Kimmel as host, as announced by awards show executive producers and showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner. They said they thought Kimmel would do anything on stage while still maintaining his hilarious personality.
“We are thrilled to have Jimmy pull off his hat trick on this world stage. We know he’ll be funny and up for anything.
Kimmel himself expressed his gratitude for hosting for the third time, joking that the gig could either be an honor or a trap. Well, his worries don’t come out of nowhere. Do you remember what happened the last time someone made a joke on stage?
“Being invited to host the Oscars for the third time is either a great honor or a trap. Anyway, I’m grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone said no.
The Oscars have seen a huge drop in views in recent years. The audience that exceeded 50 million is now struggling to reach even 20 million. The 2022 Oscars hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Skyes and Regina Hall drew just 16.6 million viewers. That was just a slight increase from the 2021 Oscars with an audience of just 10.4 million, the awards show’s lowest.
Adding Kimmel to the team is the Oscars’ way of trying to regain that popularity, as her previous round of hosting the awards show averaged 26.5 million viewers. Maybe picking a familiar face and going the safe route is just what the Oscars need.

While ABC Entertainment President Craig Erwich believes Kimmel’s return as host is “a dream come true,” viewers couldn’t help but disagree. Many said the Oscars could have chosen anyone but him. Twitter highlighted viewer concerns that the 95e The Oscars just won’t be fun.

Impressive choice. I don’t think it could have been worse. And it takes talent

We don’t need an unfunny host. We need someone (behind and in front of the camera) who loves movies

On the one hand people said they would rather see Ricky Gervais, Amy Poehler and Tiny Fey as hosts and on the other hand a few are relieved saying they at least didn’t choose Amy Schumer as their hosts. host. Fans fear hosting Kimmel will bring back Matt Damon’s outdated rivalry once again. All the fans seem to want, for once, a more interesting Oscar show, even if it takes another “slapgate” controversy to do it. Some even think the Oscars did just fine without a host, entirely. However, the audience is different.
Although Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said they thought Kimmel’s love of movies and ability to connect with audiences was perfect for the series, only time (and number of views) will reveal how well thought out the plan was.
The 2023 Oscars will take place in Los Angeles on March 12.
