The League of Legends-based netflix show, Esoteric, was released in 2021, and with its release came a wave of positive reviews. Not only was it widely appreciated by viewers, but critics were also very impressed with the adaptation of the video game into the anime series. Esoteric is also one of the lucky shows to find a place in Rotten Tomatoes’ 100% rating club.
Esoteric has a bigger fanbase than you might imagine. A hugely popular actor and video game enthusiast, Henry Cavill is one of many fans of Esoteric. The actor recently opened up about how addicted he was when he started watching the show. He even got his girlfriend, Natalie Viscuso hooked!

Henry Cavill couldn’t stop watching Arcane

In a chat with BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb, Henry Cavill spoke about his fixation on the critically acclaimed show. Plumb is actually the one who suggested Cavill watch the show, given the latter’s obsession with video games. When Plumb asked Cavill if he liked Esoteric as much as he told her he would, Cavill replied in the affirmative.
“Yes, I really did! I’m so glad you told me, because when you said it, I immediately came home and was like, ‘Well Natalie, this guy at work told me I should watch Arcanum.’ And she was like, ‘Oh I’ve heard some really good things about this.’ I couldn’t stop looking at him.
The Enola Holmes The actor added that even when it was very late at night and his girlfriend, Natalie Viscuso, suggested they get some sleep, Cavill still wasn’t ready to log off from Netflix. He convinced her to stay up and continue watching the show with him. Cavill said he was very grateful to Plumb for bringing him the show, which he otherwise would have missed.
Plumb may have ignited hope in the hearts of Cavill fans by stating that he hopes one day Cavill can do a voice-over role on a series in the future. Who knows, maybe the series in question would be another adaptation of one of Cavill’s favorite video games.

Esoteric Obtains an overall positive response
History has proven time and time again that video game adaptations haven’t always been successful. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are both adaptations of popular video games. As for the films’ performance, they received Rotten Tomatoes ratings of 37% and 20% respectively. Compare it to Esoteric‘s 100%, and you have your answer.
The visually stunning anime series has been immensely praised for its storyline and intriguing characters. Esoteric follows the lives of sisters Jin and Vi, and their life in the utopian town of Piltover. After his release, Esoteric won four Emmy Awards, including an award for Outstanding Animated Program. This is the first time Netflix has won an Emmy for animation.
The show beautifully combines adventure with interesting character relationships and doesn’t just focus on being action-packed. With the show being one of the few adaptations that managed to avoid the disappointment that comes with transforming video games into movies and shows, fans can’t wait to see what the second season brings to the table. A final release date for Season 2 has yet to be decided.
