It seems the controversy behind David Ayer’s cut of the suicide squad the film resurfaces. The director is quite expressive about his dismay at the 2016 suicide squad film. He only had exactly six weeks to brainstorm and write the script, only to revise and redo the shoot afterwards. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was criticized for being too dark.

Warner Bros. decided to change the tone of Ayer’s version and make it a light version, which cost the company $22 million for reshoots. In the end, the movie obviously didn’t look like what Ayer had visualized.

The Debate Over David Ayer’s Cut Release of 2016 Suicide Squad
Despite criticism and controversy, suicide squad earned $747 million worldwide and even won an Oscar for makeup effects. However, Ayer’s fans and the director himself lobbied for the release of the original version after the Snyder Cut news broke. This was the original version of Zack Snyder Justice League before leaving the production after the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon took the wheel from there, and the final product was a far cry from Snyder’s version.
Ayer initially defended the released film and said Collider“This cut of the movie is my cut, there is no kind of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut.” But, after the release of James Gunn’s The Suicide SquadAyer posted an essay on his Twitter account and say, “The studio cut is not my movie.”

WarnerMedia Studios has already announced that as long as the cut exists, there will be no release soon, rendering Ayer’s campaign pointless. The simple reason is that there was a sequel, that of James Gunn. The Suicide Squad, and the story has already moved on. There is no point in going back. It won’t benefit the studio either; releasing the director’s cut is just a way to make more money if the movie didn’t do well. Also, there’s no guarantee that people will go to the movies and watch the new cut of a story they saw a long time ago.

Why it’s time to let go and move on
It’s a bitter pill to swallow for fans of the franchise to know that being a die-hard fan doesn’t give them the necessary qualification to dictate the creative decision. We know how toxic fans can be, and it’s a similar case with Snyder’s Cut. No one deserves to be threatened or harassed just because a studio won’t give in to someone’s call.

Plus, James Gunn being the new CEO of DC Studios means he has a lot on his plate. His response to the release of Ayer Cut only opens up one possibility. Many new DC projects are planned for the next two years and going back to a story that has already closed its chapters will only delay the progress of current projects.
Years have passed and it’s time to move on. We don’t always get what we want, and as fans we have a moral obligation to respect the studio’s decision. Cinema is a collaborative effort between creator and consumer.
