Martin Maldonado’s father is not Candy Maldonado although he has a similar last name and works in the same industry,
They have a great friendship even though they are both from Puerto Rico, have met several times and been photographed together due to their similar professional backgrounds.
Candy provided color commentary for the World Baseball Classic and regular season games on ESPN Deportes. Martin is a fantastic player, according to the general manager of the Dominican Baseball League’s Gigantes del Cibao.
Chris Berman, another ESPN analyst, gave him the nickname “Candyman”. Martin has the distinction of having scored the first game-winning shot outside of the United States in the World Series, while Maldonado is the only giant to score a hat-trick in the 1989 World Series.
Maldonado served as a backstop for two American League (AL) pennant-winning teams while playing for the Astros. He caught several no-hitters, one of only two receivers in Astros history to do so, and Candy is quite proud of his performance on the field.
