Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters around the world this week, and fans are thrilled with Angela Bassett’s performance. The actress entered the MCU in 2018 as Queen Ramonda of Wakanda and mother of Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa and Letitia Wright’s Princess Shuri.
Bassett reprized his role in the sequel, this time taking on a bigger role after King T’Challa was absent from the film following Boseman’s tragic passing in 2020. Black Panther 2’s Angela Bassett Talks Oscar Nomination Rumors
In his interview with Variety, Angela Bassett spoke about the rumors circulating regarding her performance and a pending Oscar award. She’s clearly surprised and honored, but the actress clarified things:
“You don’t do these kinds of projects for the rewards. I appreciate the buzz on it because I know it’s not really from those big superhero movie franchises.”
Based on her statement, she doesn’t expect any rewards because let’s face it, actors don’t usually join superhero movies to earn prestigious accolades. But, seeing her deliver an exemplary performance, fans campaigned for her Oscar nomination.
This isn’t the first time an MCU movie has been nominated for an Oscar. Black Panther was named Best Picture, and this could be the first time a Marvel cast member will have the honor of receiving an award for their performance in a superhero movie.
