Filmmaker Daniel Kwan revealed in an interview that actor Jim Carrey once approached him and pitched him the idea of making a found-footage horror film on the set of the 2014 film. Dumb and Dumber To.
Stupid and even dumber The series starred Carrey and Jeff Daniels, two silly best friends who go on a jaunt across the country and return with a bag full of cash that’s supposed to be a ransom. The sequel came out in 2014, which was just as hilarious but never exceeded the charm of the original film.

In a round table with The Hollywood ReporterKwan shared that Carrey got the idea for the pitch from his own experience producing the first film.
“He had just seen Paranormal Activity and was like, “Guys, this is found footage, and it’s awful, have you seen it?” And we were like, ‘Uh-huh, we heard about it. Where are you going? And he said to me, ‘I haven’t seen anyone do that, but with comedy. And I have this great idea.”
Jim Carrey suggested they were going to shoot Dumb and Dumber To, and suddenly strange things were happening on set, like doors opening, things breaking, and people getting hurt. Later, they’ll make it into a found behind-the-scenes video that slowly turns into a horror movie.
Kwan and his creative partner, Daniel Scheinert, became interested in the idea and began to come up with a plan. They tried to pitch the script to the producers, but they refused.
“We pitched the idea, and they were like, ‘We’re not really going to do this. I’m sorry, Jim was really excited, but there’s no way the studio is letting us make a movie while they’re shooting Dumb and Dumber To.”

The concept was, indeed, a perfect project for the Daniels since they are known for making quirky and bizarre movies. Fans would remember this in 2016 Swiss army man featuring Daniel Radcliffe, a corpse found on the shore and used as a life support device. They also created Everything everywhere all at once starring actress Michelle Yeoh, a laundromat owner who suddenly finds her calling in life as a savior of the world.
At the time Carrey floated the odd idea, the Daniels were just getting started in their career. It was thoughtful of the actor to trust them with such a wild yet brave concept. Their quirky directing style is also evident in other projects, such as music videos by various artists.
Carrey, on the other hand, is also interested in a Almighty Bruce sequel in which its titular character would possess the powers of the devil instead of god.
Dumb and Dumber To is available to watch via Prime Video, Apple TV and Netflix.
